The autumnal equinox has arrived and its energy is able to fill us with awe and wonder. Today’s question to the cards is: how does this equinox affect us on a collective level?

The reading begins with the High Priestess in reversed position, dismantling the world of secrecy she has been hiding underneath her cloak for such a long time. The darkness that grows as a result of her mantle, covering the world, becomes for most people a frightening stage of ignorance and fear. How is the darkness that is being uncovered supposed to bring about positive changes, people will ask. And, in their ignorance, they will distort the energy of the High Priestess, while her wisdom will be turned into the madness that is also suggested by her male counterpart, the upright Magician. The instincts revealed grow heavy and dark upon the shoulders of humanity…

The upturned position of the High Priestess is continued in the image of the Tower. The confinement the High Priestess offered was similar to a tower of secrecy in which the fruits of an upcoming event gathered. Running away from change and the unyielding truth, the human conscience hid behind the walls of an imposing tower of security. However, the shift of consciousness that has been delayed has only gathered newer powers, and new possibilities of revelation emerge through this card. The black background only suggests that the days that are slowly becoming shorter bring a dark night not only in surroundings, but in the human soul too. The king and queen of the Tower fall into an abyss of darkness and despair; from the highest position at the top of the mountain the surroundings shift and humanity is able to see that each event that was previously considered a victory simply turned into a loss unseen at first.

The Last Judgement represents the call from the higher Self asking for meaning in the midst of delusion and confusing experiences. As the darkness of the Tower envelops the soul, a certain glimmer showing the direction is suggested by this card. The darkness brings a revelation that could not be seen before. It is an exposure explained by the Nine of Swords in reverse, a phenomenon that concerns again, the hidden self that has been playing with the many masks that the unconscious may sometimes wear. Secrets that have kept the heart awake at night, memories from a past that is too painful to remember with a clear conscience and a smile, a sense of guilt that engulfs the soul and the mind…Where have all these thoughts been until now? It seems almost impossible to see where their primary source is… A flowing river of unconscious negativity, becoming conscious and brought into light by the Sun. All that is excessive will soon become vicious. The sun brings a glimmer of hope; yet it remains unmoved in the face of what humans truly are.

In the same manner that the light of the Sun exposes the true colours of the objects of the outside world, it is also able to recognise the true contours of the unconscious realm that lies in darkness. However, if the light of the Sun is too harsh or judgemental instead of acknowledging both sides of the story, consciousness is being affected. Bringing light from the outside into the darkness of the unconscious results into filtering its elements through a position of judgement and misunderstanding, resulting into the madness of the upturned Magician.

How is one able, therefore, to transform the negative side of these cards into an experience that brings about change that is received harmoniously?

The Magician upturned, in spite of the many negative connotations it has been given, holds the secret key to an answer. In his trickster position, the magician touches upon those elements that need to be reconsidered. It is often the trickster archetype that holds the faithful mirror to the potential that exists both inside and outside. In order to re-establish the secure and powerful Magician in its upright position, one has to look at first at the world outside with the energy of a Fool. Before any alchemical process is done, one needs to gather one’s instruments, embark on a journey towards the Darkness of the Soul in order to bring into Light the transmuted gold of the experiences that are unseen by the outside world. The Sun becomes an inner result of transmutation rather than an exterior force. Darkness accumulated enforces the Black Sun that shines in its own right; a disintegration of the old in order to acquire and embody the new that is explored by the Scorpio archetype, whose season is going to start soon.

One has to remember that death is only the first stage of a life-long transformation… Through death, the soil is gathering its strength, and soon the Magician will regain his power over all the four elements.
