A Play Therapy session involves a lot more than just the session itself. Particularly in a school setting, where you can find yourself in running to the other side of the school to pick up a child for their session.
Set up and resetting the playroom are equally as important and can vary depending on the nature of the therapeutic intervention being used. In Play Therapy, children do not need to pack away which is can often come as a shock to schools and parents. While we want children to learn to pack away their toys and show respect for their environment, in play therapy we want children to be able to leave the room having left any feeling or experiences behind with them. In play therapy, we are the container that holds the child’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
In a school, discussions can be held regularly with teachers which is not something as easily accessible when working in a different setting.
Note taking is an essential component of the play therapy process as it allows therapists to record and track progress. These are confidential and stored securely.
