Periodically checking your child’s weight may be more important than you think!

Not only is weight marker of your child’s healthy growth, but it’s also really important for doctors to be able to calculate the correct doses when prescribing medication for children.

Children’s bodies metabolise medications differently so we need to adjust the doses of most (if not all) medications and we do this based on their weight!

This is particularly important so that we don’t over- or underdose children when prescribing them medications.

If your child comes for a face to face appointment, we can weigh them in the office, however with Telehealth on the rise, sometimes we don’t have that information so it’s great if you do!

Consider this your sign to weigh your kids today!

Iron deficiency is common, treatable and often underdiagnosed - especially in women.

There is A LOT of misinformation and confusion around the interpretation of iron studies on blood tests. There is also increasing evidence that our laboratory reference ranges set the cutoff for iron deficiency too low - both of these circumstances can result in significant under-diagnosis of iron deficiency.

There is increasing evidence that out physiologic cut- off for iron deficiency should be a ferritin of 50 ng/mL (as opposed to the current 15-30 ng/mL) - link to article below.

If you’ve got symptoms of iron deficiency (fatigue, poor exercise performance, cognitive impairment or restless legs) book in to a TRUSTED GP to get your levels tested today!

Can you spot the difference between these two skin lesions in the same patient? 🧐

They’re actually both skin cancers (Squamous Cell Carcinomas - SCCs) - the difference is their stage and size. 🧬

The lesion on the left is early stage and was much more easily removed that the lesion of the right, which required a lot larger excision. ✂️

This is a great example of the importance of getting your skin checked regularly! If we find cancers early, they’re a lot easier to treat! 👨🏼‍⚕️🩺

Can you spot the melanoma here? 🧐

This was a small, changing skin lesion on a patient of mine that we removed, which came back as a melanoma when the cells were checked under the microscope 🔬

It’s a good reminder that any changing moles should be checked by your local, friendly GP! 👨🏼‍⚕️🩺

Sunburn is an acute inflammatory reaction of the skin caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, mainly UVB rays. When UV rays pe*****te the skin, they damage the DNA in skin cells, triggering an immune response. 🚨🧬

This leads to the release of inflammatory molecules causing redness (erythema), warmth, pain, and swelling. Your body attempts to repair the DNA damage, but repeated sunburns increase the risk of skin ageing and skin cancer. 🩺🧬

Protect your skin with sunscreen, clothing, and shade to avoid harmful UV exposure! 🧴🌞

💊 Did you know there’s more treatment available than just simple antihistamines for allergies?

🤧 Sneezing, running nose and eyes and constant itching from allergies are very frustrating symptoms!

💊 Immunotherapy is a treatment method that exposes your immune system to a tiny dose of allergen over time. Over many months, your immune system becomes desensitised to the allergens and symptoms will improve when exposed to the same allergen in the future!

🤧 If you’re constantly bothered by allergic symptoms then book in with your local friendly GP today!

☀️ This is a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) which is a type of skin cancer that occurs on sun exposed areas like the arms, chest and face.

🔎 If detected early, they can be treated effectively and cured!

👨🏼‍⚕️ We can often treat and manage early pre-cancerous skin lesions on the spot at a skin check, before they turn nasty!

🕶️ So if you’ve been putting off that skin check, now’s a great time to get on top of it before summer!

Did you know you can have moles on your feet? 👣 🧐

The skin here is called acral skin, which is different to normal skin. It doesn’t have hair follicles or sebaceous glands, and also shows a ridge and furrow pattern.

Here you can see a normal mole on a foot - you can see the pigment lies in the furrows of the skin.

You can develop melanoma anywhere on the skin - including your feet! So next time you’re in for your skin check, make sure you doctor checks your feet too! 👣 🔎

The Medicare Safety Net is a government program that can help reduce your out of pocket costs for certain doctors visits (e.g. your GP and Specialist visits) and out of hospital medical expenses (e.g. certain tests and scans).

When you have paid a certain amount of out of pocket costs for medical services in a calendar year, your safety net will be automatically activated. After this point you will usually get a lot more money back from Medicare for certain out of hospital medical expenses (e.g. GP visits).

If you are in a relationship or family - it is VERY IMPORTANT to register your family with Medicare for the safety net. This means that your safety net threshold is combined, meaning your family will:
1. Reach the safety net for the year a lot faster
2. All your family members will reach the safety net at the same time

This does NOT happen automatically and you need to register as a relationship/family with Medicare separately. It is definitely worth your time as it may save you a lot of money on medical expenses each year.

Medicare is a very complicated and confusing system, so for more information have a look on the MyGov website or ask your local, friendly GP to help explain it to you! 🩺👨🏼‍⚕️
