As we all know, the world is facing an unprecedented pandemic with the rapid spread of the Corona virus, or Covid-19.
South Africa has had the advantage of seeing what can happen if the virus is not properly contained. We have also seen shelves begin to empty, and basic products such as soaps and hand sanitizers beging to deplete.
We cannot ignore the fact that we live in one of the world's most unequal countries. How will those unable to stockpile be able to feed their families in the coming weeks and months? How will informal workers purchase groceries when social distancing impacts their income? How will the elderly in townships, one of the most vulnerable groups to infection, be protected?
As Cyril Ramaphosa said when he addressed the nation, "Those who have resources, those who are healthy, need to assist those who are in need and who are vulnerable."
