With news of her recent passing a few days ago, we thought it would be appropriate to honor the strength and resilience of one of the most famous musical icons - Tina Turner🎼
Tina is considered a rock-n-roll legend, with track hits like “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, “River Deep – Mountain High”, and “The Best”. She is also known for breaking the silence on domestic violence in the 80’s (back when domestic violence was considered a taboo topic of conversation)
Tina met her ex-husband, Ike Turner, when she was just 17 years old after seeing his band perform at a local venue. Ike saw her potential and made her the lead singer of his band, choosing her stage name himself, and then lavishing her through clothes and jewelry as a way to impress her. They married in 1962. Tina and Ike were together for a total of 16 years and she endured horrific abuse through the entirety of the relationship.
By 1978, Tina had the courage to leave the relationship with nothing, moved away, and had to rebuild her entire career – singing out in Las Vegas and appearing on various TV shows. In 1981, she made one of the biggest decisions of her life that would also impact the way the world saw domestic violence – she would do a tell-all interview about her relationship 📣
Prior to this tell-all interview in 1981, research around domestic violence was limited and it was thought that poor women without resources were the only victims being abused. When Tina Turner spoke out about her experiences of abuse, it brought awareness to the fact that domestic violence was everywhere – regardless of social status, resources, age, etc. By Tina sharing her story, it started a wave of women coming forward to speak out about abuse.
Tina Turner became a household name for, not only her impact through music, but through her inspirational courage to bringing light to dark realities. She was an advocate for domestic violence survivors and the LBGTQ+ community.
May this rockstar of a woman REST IN POWER ✊💜
