For many women, the third trimester is accompanied by a feeling of unpreparedness. This feeling, often called “nesting”, makes an expectant mom feel as though EVERYTHING needs to be cleaned/put together/ taken care of immediately because the baby will be knocking on the door any minute.

Aside from the usual wash baby clothes, set up the crib, install the car seat, parents should also get in contact with and decide on a pediatrician prior to delivery. Many pediatricians offer prenatal meetings, where parents can speak to and interview a pediatrician to ensure they are a good fit.

Do you know who else parents-to-be should be talking to before delivering? If you guessed lactation consultants, you’re right. Many LCs, myself included, LOVE to establish a connection with parents before baby arrives. During a prenatal consultation, we can discuss your feeding goals — whether it’s direct breast feeding or bottle feeding — talk about what to expect the first few weeks after delivery, and answer any questions you may have. Being prepared and knowing what to expect can bring SO much calmness to an otherwise chaotic transition.

Well hello there! Lots of new faces as of lately, so I feel like an introduction is due.

I’m Shelby! A wife, mama, nurse, and lactation consultant.

In 2019, I graduated from Jefferson University and began working on a Mother/Baby unit - my literal dream job.

In 2020, I got pregnant with my now 16 month old son and continued working during the pandemic.

In 2021, my maternity leave came to an end and I returned to work for a few months while pursuing my International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification. Upon passing my boards, I resigned from the hospital and began my own lactation consulting private practice - Mama’s Village!

Today I meet with mamas, both in person locally & virtually, to assist them with whatever postpartum throws their way.

My goal is to be the trusted support, or village, that many mothers don’t have…especially during these isolating times. As a RN with obstetric & neonatal experience, an IBCLC, and a fellow mama, I can give professional and real life aid.

Thanks for being here and welcome to the village! 🤍

STOP. Here's a reminder to drink some water. Don't forget to take care of your needs too, mama.

Take the guess work out of it. Bink bottles make it easy to ensure you're getting adequate fluid intake while pregnant and breastfeeding. Find them in our shop!

Continuing our World Breastfeeding Week series, let's discuss ways partners can help protect breastfeeding: Supporting Mama! A good support system is SO important in protecting and preserving a breastfeeding dyad. Without it, a mama may feel alone and overwhelmed by the weight of breastfeeding.

❊ So, how can partners get involved? In a nutshell, take care of mama. Help her get into a comfortable position for feedings. Calm the baby as mama adjusts her pillows and gets comfortable to be trapped for a bit.

❊ Refill her water bottle and ensure she's eating meals. Motherhood is messy and oftentimes, causes mama to put her needs on the back burner. Adequate nutrition and hydration is necessary for milk production.

❊ Hand her the baby in the middle of the night/take baby back to the crib after feedings. Now, I'm not saying partners should do this for every single night feeding, but sharing the work at night can help support mama not only physically, but mentally...especially in those early postpartum weeks.

❊ Washing pump parts and bottles. So. Many. Pump. Parts. The last thing mama wants to do after pumping for 30+ minutes is to stand over the sink and wash those parts. Help her out now and again.

These are just a few ways partners can help support and protect breastfeeding everyday. What other ways can you think of? Let me know in the comments!

World Breastfeeding Week, day 3!

Going along with the theme this year of Protecting Breastfeeding, let’s talk about how expectant mamas can help protect breastfeeding: EDUCATION.

I honestly think maternal education is one of, if not THE, most important step to protect and preserve breastfeeding.

Many women wait until after birth to research breastfeeding. That’s a reactive action. They’re tired, maybe a bit overwhelmed, and trying to learn this new skill that’s “supposed to come naturally”.

(Spoiler alert: moms AND babies need to learn and practice breastfeeding.)

Imagine doing the research during pregnancy, having that knowledge to be prepared once baby arrives. Now THAT is how we protect breastfeeding. By being informed, educated, and prepared.

As a lactation consultant, this is literally what I’m here for. Don’t wait until you’re struggling with breastfeeding. Reach out. Let’s get you ready, mama.

World Breastfeeding Week, day 2! Let’s talk about the objectives for this year.

❊ Inform people about the importance of protecting breastfeeding - Education is such a crucial step in understanding.

❊ Anchor breastfeeding support as a vital public health responsibility - Support must be easily accessible for all. Hello, lactation consultants!

❊ Engage with individuals and organizations for greater impact - Get involved. Stay up to date.

❊ Galvanize action on protecting breastfeeding to improve public health - Actions speak louder than words. Actively participate in protecting breastfeeding.

I just want to take a second and step back. Although I am a lactation consultant and it’s World Breastfeeding Week, I want to let the formula mamas know they’re doing an amazing job too. I see you, mama.

Allow me to officially introduce myself...I'm Shelby! I'm a registered nurse and international board certified lactation consultant (RN, BSN, IBCLC).

I graduated from nursing school in 2019, landed my dream job on a mother/baby unit, and shortly after passed NCLEX and began working. Maternal-newborn care has ALWAYS been a passion of mine.

At the beginning of 2020, I became pregnant with my son. Babies are contagious on the mother/baby unit. As we all know, soon after the start of the new year in 2020, the pandemic hit the U.S. There I was, a newly graduated nurse, pregnant, working during a pandemic. That sure was something.

Fast-forward to August 2020, and my son is born (at my hospital, of course)! Maternity leave began and I was soaking in the newborn bubble. But, like all good things, maternity leave came to an end and I was saying goodbye to my son for 13 hour shifts. Back into the pandemic. It was tough. Tough leaving my baby, tough being in the midst of the unknown, just tough. I found myself googling "work from home RN jobs" frequently.

And then it dawned on me (with the help of my husband), I should become a Lactation Consultant. I was already helping so many friends with breastfeeding, postpartum, and newborn questions because the pandemic had many offices closed. If my friends needed help, imagine how many other women out there could benefit from my experience. And there you have it, Mama's Village was born in 2021. Welcome to the Village!
