Wrapped up two wonderful days with my fellow Executive Board members of the (APHA). Every board meeting leaves me in awe of the amazing work that APHA does to improve the health and well-being of where people live, work, and play.

Ever wondered how to be part of APHA without a public health degree? Here’s the news – you are already part of team public health! Many individuals are contributing to public health without even realizing it.

Excited to reconnect with my public health peers at the upcoming APHA annual meeting over the next few days.

People often ask me what the key to my success is, and I always say it’s having an amazing partner. The partners we have in our lives are vital to our professional careers, often acting as the wind beneath our wings. For me, I couldn’t be the professional I am today without the unwavering support and encouragement of my other half, AnTanique Buckley—my best friend and life partner—by my side. Today, we celebrate a decade of marriage together. She is the true MVP. ✊🏾

It’s my birthday 🥳. As many of you know, each year on my birthday, I choose a theme to shape my journey and growth for the coming year. This past year, inspired by the birth of my son, I chose FATHERHOOD—a decision that has profoundly influenced both my personal life and professional trajectory. Becoming a father has deepened my understanding of what it means to look forward, not just for ourselves but for future generations. It has made me more aware of the environments where we live, work, and play, and how they shape our health and well-being.

As I enter this next birthday chapter, thinking about the necessary work to create an environment for my son and future generations to thrive, the theme of this year will be “GOOD TROUBLE.” Inspired by the late John Lewis’s quote: “Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year; it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.” As I go through this year, I look forward to building networks, collaborations, and alliances with others who are looking to make GOOD TROUBLE to improve the health of where people live, work, and play.

Feeling refreshed and recharged after 3 weeks of PTO! 🌴☀️

Taking time off is essential for our well-being and productivity, but unplugging can be challenging. Here’s how I managed to disconnect during my recent family vacation to Antigua 🇦🇬:

1️⃣ Log out of work email and messaging platforms: I intentionally logged out of all work-related accounts and changed the password. This helped me avoid the temptation to check messages and truly disconnect.

2️⃣ Use app restrictions and focus mode: I set up app restrictions on my iPhone to limit access to work and social media apps. I also created a “vacation focus mode” that minimized notifications and helped me stay present in the moment.

3️⃣ Spend Quality Time with Loved Ones: Connect with family and friends, engage in meaningful conversations (not about work), and create lasting memories of our shared humanity.

These simple steps made a huge difference in my ability to relax and enjoy quality time with my family. If you’re planning a vacation, I highly recommend trying them out!

Remember, PTO is a valuable benefit, so make the most of it. I often left too many jobs without using my PTO the way it was intended.  Disconnect, recharge, and come back to work feeling refreshed and ready to tackle new challenges.

✨ Navigating Parenthood: Setting the Stage for an Equitable Future 💖👶🏾

🤔 My grandfather always said we are in this world for two reasons: first, to make the world a better place with whatever God-given talents, privileges, and networks we have been given; and second, to mentor and coach the next generation to build on the work we started.

🙇🏾‍♂️The past five months have been a transformative journey as I embarked on the path of parenthood, reflecting on my mission to champion equity and justice. I've been blessed to have an amazing partner who has been intentional about streaming every talk I've done while on the road and explaining to our son what his dad is trying to achieve (Picture)

✊🏾It made me think about the importance of setting the stage for justice: As parents, we play a crucial role in shaping our children's values. Since becoming a parent, I have deeply reflected on the control we, in the present, have over how many future persons there will be, what opportunities they will have, and what problems they will inherit. It's important for us to foster an environment where justice, equity, diversity, and inclusivity are not just words but integral parts of our family ethos. Our homes are the first classrooms for understanding equity. The work we start there can set the stage for future generations.

🙏🏾I am thankful for the flexibility of my paternity leave at NCQA as I enter my second stint of paternity leave. Paternity leave is not just a perk; it's a powerful societal shift, offering parents the opportunity to take time off to bond with their children. Paternity leave supports fathers as caregivers and strengthens family bonds, fostering a culture of shared responsibilities.

As I enter this second stint, I can't wait to share with my son all the amazing people in my life and the things I've learned from my community of change agents. ✊🏾

AHA’s Accelerating Health Equity Conference 🤳🏾. Health Equity is a team sport and requires stakeholders from all sectors. The conference brought together the health equity justice league. It was good catching up with friends and colleagues, meeting new colleagues and brainstorming how to make a more just and equitable society. 🙏🏾 for the community of health equity influences in my life.

The AHA’s Accelerating Health Equity Conference sessions have been amazing. It was an honor to represent NCQA and our collaboration across the healthcare ecosystem. This conference felt like a family reunion of all the justice team members coming together to learn, grow, and join forces to advance health equity.

From the keynote speakers to the amazing panel I was able to moderate titled: "Making Data Come Alive to Drive Action for Equitable Outcomes.”

Kudos 👏🏾 to the amazing AHA team that put together such an amazing conference.

Last month got the opportunity to celebrate the 5 Year Anniversary of United States of Care (🙏🏾Michael J.E. Grier, MPH for encouraging me to come out). Thank you 🙏🏾 Healthcare Innovation Executive Exchange for the opportunity to share the work NCQA is doing around health equity (including population health and SDOH) for hospitals and health plans. Humbled to be part of an amazing panel which included Dr. Andrea J. Boudreaux, MPH, FACHE, Tina Simmons, and Lauren Riplinger. In addition the masterful facilitation of Mark Hagland. It was a great opportunity to hear about about all the great work healthcare is doing to make a equitable and just experience for patients and families

Earlier this week I joined my fellow change agents for our Executive Board Spring meeting. Through the conversation I thought of a quote:

“We all have a choice. We can create transformational action that will safeguard the living conditions for future generations. Or we can continue with our business as usual and fail.” ~Greta Thunburg

For the sake of future people:

1. We need to sustainable fund public health infrastructure.

2. Address the health impacts of climate change.

3. Uphold and strengthen critical public health laws and regulations and reverse damaging rollbacks.

You might ask yourself, am I in public health? Yes, you are, we all contribute for a more just and equitable society.

Thank you 🙏🏾 to the staff of the American Public Health Association, you are part of the lifeblood of public health.

A thing happened last week🥰. I got the amazing honor of receiving the 2023 Outstanding Alumni Award 🥇 from

This award not on my efforts alone but the culmination of efforts of my ancestors, family and friends. Those that poured their passion, wisdom, aspirations, and hope. In addition to all those in the future that are inspired by my life.

I would like to thank the program for being my tribe while I was at MSU. You just get a degree at MSU you gain a family.

Thank you 🙏🏾 to Michigan State University, the college and Dean Duxbury. My pledge is to be hungry, be curious, and be humble.
