Full-spectrum dominance. What has it gained for Americans? The U.S. doctrine that has directed American military policy for the last two or three decades stipulates that the U.S. should be able to fight and win a major conflict and also a minor one at the same time. It has led to American military spending that now nears one trillion dollars a year and surpasses the combined total of the next nine countries with the largest militaries in the world. Has this policy made Americans any safer, or reduced the threat of more wars? On the contrary, other countries, rather than remain content as second-rate powers, have doubled down on building up their armed forces.
In addition, countries that the U.S. considers adversaries, are taking their cue from America and following their own self-interests rather global cooperation. Russia, for example, after failing to get the NATO alliance to take its concerns about NATO expansion seriously, decided to take matters into their own hands and invade Ukraine. China, after the U.S. surrounded it with dozens of bases in countries like South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore and Australia, embarked on a military build-up that brought its arsenal of missiles and naval forces up to and on par with the U.S. In computer simulated war games that the Pentagon conducts yearly, the red team (China) has defeated the blue team (the U.S.) each year since 2018.
In the battle to stay ahead, the U.S. has turned to its allies to ramp up expansion of their militaries. The hope is that with their allies the U.S. could defeat Russia and China. Already that plan is drawing push-back from American officials. The concern is that such a project will require the U.S. to share its military technology with other countries.
Notably, no one in the U.S. political class is talking about what would be the most sensible of all plans which would be to seek a path towards a reduction and eventual elimination of conventional and nuclear weapons. The wealthy, of course, would oppose such a venture because they profit so handsomely from weapons production and war.

The Three Body Problem. As has others have stated, Trump seems content with dividing the world into three regions in which either Russia, China or the U.S. would dominate. Events of the last year seem to bear this out. His declarations that the U.S. would take Greenland and Canada. And now take his actions against Venezuela and his acceding to letting Russia have its way in Ukraine. His thinking might well be “let Russia have its way in Central Asia. Then China can have Southeast Asia and the U.S. will have the Americas.”
That’s a dangerous prospect for humanity. Can three nuclear-armed countries jointly rule the world, extract wealth and power from the masses, and avoid nuclear armageddon?

No end to Trump’s meanness. In a recent memo to U.S. embassies, diplomats were instructed to pressure American allies to curb immigration to their countries. Diplomats were also told to report instances in which countries appeared to overly favor immigrants over local populations. The Trump administration wants allied countries to limit immigration and increase deportations. This is in line with Trump’s efforts to limit immigration into the U.S. including those people designated as refugees. In the past, the U.S. admitted refugees that were vetted by the State Department and were fleeing their countries because of political oppression. Now the number of those refugees is limited to 7,500 a year and many of the slots are reserved for white Afrikaner South Africans who Trump claims are being persecuted. In 2024, 100,000 refugees were admitted to the U.S.
What most reports about the migrant crisis fail to mention is that people are fleeing countries that were virtually destroyed or damaged by U.S. military attacks and economic sanctions. The people of Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Venezuela have all suffered from American efforts at regime change. Regrettably, most Americans are unaware of the consequences of U.S. foreign policy. A recent poll found that only 20% of Americans are aware of the U.S. military build-up in the Caribbean that is threatening Venezuela.

This is NOT what a ceasefire looks like. The truce between Hezbollah and Israel is about one year old. Yet, with near daily Israeli bombing attacks on Lebanon, one could be forgiven if you didn’t realize it was still in effect. On Sunday, Israel killed Hezbollah’s Chief of Staff in Beirut along with five other people in a bombing attack that also wounded 25 others. In Gaza, Israel continues to kill Palestinians despite the ceasefire. In seven weeks, over 300 Palestinians have died as a result of Israeli fire and bombs. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers continue to attack Palestinian residents while the Israeli army looks on. This weekend settlers set fire to a mosque.
Meanwhile, the United Nations approved the Trump peace proposal for Gaza that effectively leaves the Palestinians voiceless in negotiations over their future. The conundrum now is that no nation is willing to be part of the international peace keeping force that will station troops in Gaza. Since the primary mission of that force will be to disarm Hamas, no one is willing to take on that task.

What ceasefire? Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have killed 290 Palestinians since the start of the current ceasefire. Many of those killed were women and children. In this six-week period, three Israeli soldiers have been killed. This overwhelming disparity in the numbers killed is consistent with the number of people killed since October 2023. During this time while nearly 70,000 Palestinians have been killed by the IDF, the Israel Defense Ministry reports that 1,152 Israeli security personnel have been killed. This number includes the 397 Israeli soldiers killed on October 7.
Meanwhile, Israel has been bombing Lebanon on a near daily basis. Hezbollah and Israel are also in a ceasefire, and Hezbollah has not retaliated for any of these attacks. This week a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon was targeted killing 13 people. A car and two buildings were struck in which Israel claims Hamas fighters were operating. Hamas denies that claim and said that the two buildings housed families that were displaced by earlier attacks.
Trump’s not paying attention, nor does he apparently care.

COP30. The 30th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The U.S. is absent from this conference for the first time in 30 years. A White House spokesperson said, “President Trump will not jeopardize our country’s economic and national security to pursue vague climate goals.” On the other hand, China is taking on a leading role at the conference showcasing its renewable and electric vehicle industries. Meng Xiangfeng, vice president of CATL, the world’s largest battery maker urged participating nations to “fulfill the Paris vision … of a shared future. Let’s advance climate cooperation and build a clean, beautiful world together.” While the U.S. retreats from the world’s efforts to combat climate change, China looks ready to take on a leadership role, both politically and economically.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has turned its attention to dominating the Americas. Using military threats and actions, tariffs, sanctions and economic pressure and bailouts, the U.S. is seeking to bend the nations of North and South America to its will. It seeks to benefit from exploiting their resources and markets.

Palestine Update. Since the Trump peace plan went into effect, the heavy Israeli assault on Gaza has been tempered somewhat, but Palestinians are still suffering from sporadic attacks, lack of adequate food and medicine and no help or permission to rebuild. The yellow line which Israeli forces have withdrawn behind has cut Gaza virtually in half and squeezed the Palestinian population into what remains. Rafah is completely under Israel’s control along with half of Gaza City. Hamas has taken control of the Palestinian sectors and has provided security for food distribution. The looting of aid trucks is no longer happening. There are some Hamas fighters trapped in Israeli controlled areas and negotiations are underway to get them reunited with their comrades.
Meanwhile, Palestinians in the West Bank are being hit harder than ever by Israeli settlers and the army. Since October 7, 2023 one thousand Palestinians have been killed either by the settlers or the Israeli army. One-fifth of them have been children. In this October alone, the United Nations documented 260 attacks on Palestinians by settlers and the Israeli army. In the last two years, three thousand Palestinians have been displaced from their homes and lands by Israeli settlers. Over 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced by Israeli army actions in the northern West Bank. The IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) has constructed 1,000 barriers and checkpoints to inhibit free movement among Palestinians.
All these moves are in line with Israel’s plan to annex the West Bank. In the last three years, the Israeli government has approved the building of 50,000 new settlements. It has also expropriated large tracts of West Bank land and declared them Israeli state territory. A half-million Israelis now live the West Bank that is populated by three million Palestinians. Not a word from the Trump administration criticizing these injustices and crimes.
