This Dementia Action Week, 18th to 24th May, we want to continue to raise awareness of dementia, the UK's biggest killer, and the connection to hearing loss.

People who develop hearing problems during mid-life (aged 40–65) may have an increased risk of developing dementia. However, whether or not someone develops dementia depends on many other factors besides their hearing. Hearing changes could also be an early symptom of dementia. Why is it so difficult to follow conversations in noisy places? Many people notice that restaurants, cafés or family gatherings are where hearing becomes the most challenging.

Your ears pick up every sound around you, but it’s your brain that helps you focus on the speech you want to hear. It works hard to separate voices from background noise.

When hearing loss is present, some of the small details in speech can be harder to detect. That means conversations can sound less clear, especially when there are lots of competing sounds. This is why people often say they can hear someone speaking, but still struggle to understand the words.

This blog, by explains why speech becomes harder to understand in noisy places, and what your brain is doing behind the scenes to make sense of sound.

Remember when the music was loud, the nights were long, and we all felt a little bit invincible? Back in the era of synths and punk attitude, volume was part of the experience. For artists like Gary Numan, the sound of that time shaped a generation.

But years of powerful sound have consequences. Gary Numan has recently shared that he is now around 90% deaf after decades performing around loud music.

Hearing damage often builds quietly over time... long after the music fades.

If hearing isn’t as clear as it once was, contact us for professional advice. 🎶👂
