At Madonna, National Rehabilitation Week is all about celebrating incredible recoveries, and the people who help make them possible.

All week long, our team has been sharing why working in rehabilitation is so meaningful to them. As we wrap up this special week, we want to share some of their inspiring words with you.

Here’s a look at what drives our staff to do what they do every day.

We’re wrapping up National Rehabilitation Week with our final 2025 Goal Award recipient, Grace Pauley. Grace came to Madonna in a minimally conscious state after a serious car crash in September 2023. Over 108 days in our specialized pediatric program, she regained the ability to walk, talk, eat and breathe independently. Now, she’s back to being an active high school senior, peer volunteer, and fierce advocate for brain injury survivors like herself.

Congratulations to our next 2025 Goal Award winner, Lainie Linafelter! Soon after welcoming her baby girl into the world, Lainie experienced two strokes that challenged her ability to take care of her kids. With expert care and unwavering support from her family and Madonna’s care team, she relearned essential daily tasks – from diaper changes to feeding her baby – and embraced motherhood with renewed strength and confidence. Now, with her Goal Award, Lainie hopes her journey will inspire others on their own paths to recovery.

At 17, Justin Metzger’s world was turned upside down after a dirt bike accident left him with a complete spinal cord injury. His biggest worry? Whether he could still be part of his family’s farming legacy.

At Madonna, Justin’s care team tailored therapy to fit his goals, from strengthening muscles for daily chores at wheelchair-level to practicing adaptive driving with hand controls. Every step was about helping him get back to what mattered most.

Today, Justin is back on the farm, actively working alongside his family with modified equipment. With plans to study Ag Management in college, he’s proving that determination and the right support can keep dreams alive. Justin is our next 2025 Goal Award recipient.

Our next Goal Award honoree is Kylee Mueller, whose story is one of fierce determination. At just 24, a stroke caused by a chiropractic adjustment left her unable to move, speak, or breathe on her own. She came to Madonna relying on a ventilator and feeding tube. Through intensive therapy and innovative technology like the EyeGaze, Armeo®Power, and the body-weight support treadmill, Kylee relearned how to communicate, walk, and regain independence. Now back at work and walking with arm crutches, she is inspiring everyone around her with her resilience, humor and infectious laughter!

Our next 2025 Goal Award recipient is Bowen Rodman. At just 10 years old, Bowen has already shown what it means to be a true competitor. Sports have always been his passion, especially wrestling, but last year he faced an opponent no child expects — a rare neurological disorder that caused sudden inflammation in his brain and spinal cord.

With grit beyond his years, Bowen poured himself into therapy. His care team built his recovery around the things he loves most — sports, competition and movement — to help him regain strength and feeling in his arms and legs.

Today, Bowen is back where he belongs: on the baseball diamond and the wrestling mat. And now, he hopes his journey will inspire other young patients, just like Madonna’s Goal Awards wall inspired him.

During , we will honor our six Goal Award recipients whose incredible journeys showcase their remarkable recoveries at Madonna.

Kicking off the week strong, our first Goal Award honoree is Dalton Hazlett, whose journey from athlete to brain injury survivor shows true grit.

After a near-fatal ATV accident, his family and Madonna’s expert team helped him tackle an intense, personalized care plan. Now he’s back in college, learning to drive, and inspiring others every day with his courage and strength!

It’s not uncommon for a husband or wife to support their spouse after a serious injury or illness. But it’s not every day both partners need medical rehabilitation at the same time. Dwight and Christy Mayer leaned on each other and the vows they took 41 years ago to get through traumatic injuries sustained in a serious car crash.
