Thanks to our partnership with Spokes Fighting Strokes, a nonprofit that empowers stroke survivors and promotes stroke prevention, our therapeutic recreation therapy program gave patients a new way to push forward in their recovery journeys.

While she was growing up, Danni Grotzky’s grandpa had a stroke and spent time at Madonna. Watching the nursing staff go above and beyond in their care for him inspired her to pursue a career in nursing. Since then, she has served Madonna in various nursing roles over the past 17 years. Just before the 4th of July, veteran and retired firefighter Steve Skrzypek returned to Madonna—about two years after suffering a traumatic brain injury while training for a charity boxing match in Topeka, Kansas. At that time, he arrived at Madonna unable to move or breathe independently, and he struggled with speaking and swallowing. Fast forward to today, and he walked into Madonna unassisted and easily shared his stories with the staff.

Steve has dedicated his life to service, and now, in this next chapter, he is using his experience with brain injury to give back by mentoring others and writing his story. "Madonna saved my life in many ways," he reflected.

Recovery takes time, but Steve’s journey is proof that progress never stops.

When he arrived at Madonna after his liver transplant, Brian Stephenson couldn’t even lift his camera because he was so deconditioned. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever return to his beloved hobby. To celebrate the progress he made in his two months of intense inpatient rehabilitation, on his last day of recreation therapy, he used his talents to take portraits of his fellow patients. “It means so much to me to know I can still take photographs and make art,” he said. “It’s an honor to capture a small part of someone’s story like this.”

After a traumatic brain injury, advocating for yourself or your loved one is paramount to success. From day one, Duece Phaly says he knew he needed to get his brother, Dhonavanh ‘Dhon’ Cain, to Madonna after a car accident in March 2024. Throughout months of insurance denials and appeals, he never stopped advocating for Dhon. In January, his hard work paid off. Dhon was approved for medical rehabilitation at Madonna, and the pair is making the most of the opportunity with the help of specialized technology and extensive caregiver training, proving they are .

Five-year-old Miller Stockamp has more than earned her nickname, ‘Mighty Miller.’ Born 14 weeks early, weighing just 1 lb., 3 oz., Miller underwent a series of medical procedures to address problems caused by her premature birth. Her parents waited 407 long days at an acute care hospital until Miller was finally healthy enough to come home.

Flash forward to today, and Miller is a busy social butterfly who just completed kindergarten and performed in her first dance recital. She loves to sing, dance, play with her dog Crouton, and like most girls, take the occasional trip to Target!

“I was struck with such joy and gratitude watching her perform in her dance recital,” Alison Stockamp, Miller’s mom, said. “To watch this child, who wasn’t supposed to survive, let alone thrive, is such a blessing. Every leap, jump or crazy dance reminds me that our Madonna therapists helped lay the groundwork to get her to where she is today. Miller gets to have the quality of life she enjoys today because of our medical and rehab teams.”
