Swinging a swing

Swinging might not be easy for some kids typically developing or kids with low tone, difficulty with motor planning or decreased coordination.
To swing independently, one needs to have strength to hold the rope/chain and pull and push with shoulders; strength in core & trunk to shift weight by moving trunk forward and backward without losing control or falling off; and good timing or motor plan to be able to extend legs to move forward while shifting trunk back and pulling rope then flex knees, shift trunk forward, and push ropes to swing back.
What to do to help on a swing:
* Push &pull the ropes to rock in place. 5 or 10 push-pulls, since this one doesn’t actually make the swing move, you don’t want to add frustration. Great for grip and shoulder strength, and endurance!
* To initiate swing, rather than push from behind, stand in front of child, pull legs/ feet forward &up and let go; this emphasizes the movement that goes with forward motion &helps put the motor plan together.
* Once swing is moving, have him extend legs to kick his feet to your hands (stand in front and put out your hands as a target for feet). This will give your kiddo successful pumps which will help encourage, motivate & decrease frustration.
Other activities to promote the right muscles:
* wheelbarrow walking- holding kiddos legs as he “walks” hands on ground. Look out for back and belly to stay straight and not droop, that’s a sign of fatigue or difficult to hold core tight. Start with shifting weight on hands, take a step or two; then try a set distance like across a room. Take turns playing playing a board game, wheelbarrow to spinner or dice.
* Planks- make it a contest or just count to 10. Encourage him to lift belly if his back sags!
* Boat pose- looks like mid-swing: legs out, arms out, bottom on floor (knees can be bent, try balancing a toy on shins).
* Rocking on floor- start on back, hug knees to chest. Rock forward &backward. Good for core and timing- sequence of when abs turn on to move and to control).
* Push ups /wall push ups (stand with hands on wall, to do a push up.

It's important to remember that there are age ranges for kids to achieve milestones. If you have concerns please reach out to a pediatric physical therapist. We are here to help!

A child will not be smarter or more coordinated if they walk early, or talk early, or hit any other milestone on a standardized chart before their peers.

Poolside baby yoga! Yoga is great for developing posture, flexibility, strength, focus, balance, attention and calmness. Kids are born yogis! Deep breaths and being present are most important. Modify, flow and laugh.

Tummy time video!

29/03/2020

Will be posting several videos over the next few weeks to help parents with gross motor activities they can do at home. DISCLAIMER : this is a free play therapy area, suggestions by physical therapists trying to assist with gross motor development and promote exercise habits and good posture in growing kids. This is not taking the place of actual live therapy, but is a great addition, fun ways to incorporate home exercise programs, and activities for any developing child or baby. Since most of the world has more time at home with their little ones: no more school, daycare, gyms (for parent and kids) play dates, and a need for socializing and ideas to keep fit and busy, we wanted to extend our expertise. Please always check with you and your child's physician before starting any exercise regimen and please listen to your body and your child's body. If something doesn't feel right or good, check in, breath, try it in a different way, or do something different. Not every activity is going to work for every baby, child, or grown up! Have fun, enjoy the time to bond and grow with the littles, and play!

New CDC recommendation: Starting immediately and for the next 8 weeks, CDC recommends cancelling all events of 50 or more people.

Ongoing guidance recommends that, in areas where there is even minimal COVID-19, events likely to include 10 or more people at high-risk for serious issues should be cancelled. People at higher risk include older adults and people who have chronic medical conditions such as lung and heart disease, as well as diabetes.

If there is substantial spread in your area, all gatherings should be cancelled.
