With this being mental health awareness week, I thought it might help to explain what mindfulness means. The term 'mindfulness' can be defined as a state of conscious mental, physical and emotional awareness of being in the present moment. Mindfulness is about taking your attention away from the world around you and focusing on the world within you. With life being as busy and stressful for many of us, we forget to spend enough time, if any, being consciously aware of their thoughts and feelings in the present moment.
There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to finding inner calm and peace: for some walking in nature works best for others it may be gardening, cleaning, driving or simply sitting still and focusing on their breathing: for me - one of the easiest ways to find that mindful state of peace and calm is to do something creative.

Crafting has so many health benefits and can be done anywhere. It can create something permanent or something temporary, but the joy it brings lasts a lifetime.

I don't know if its the same with you today, but its been really rainy and cold and I cannot wait to finish off at my desk and get comfy on the sofa with a cuppa and carry on with the blanket I am crocheting for my son. Its a corner to corner pattern and it keeps me ever so warm as it is increasing....

I have always maintained that there is no successes or fails when being creative, apart from the expectations we put on ourselves to be experts from the moment we start and each time we try. I was no different this weekend. I had this perfect table in mind, that I was definitely going to create. I had bought some super cute Easter buckets and put everyones favourite chocoaltes and sweets in them. And thats where my disaster started. The buckets were huge. I would have had to have cleared out the local sweet sellers in order to fill them like I had imagined them to look like. I then couldn't find my Easter table mats, beautiful butterfly shaped in all the Easter colours... And then my table was too small. So I had invisaged this beautiful table filled with chocolate and flowers, with food being happily munched, instead I got a table with no decorations, they had to be removed to make room for lunch, and lunch being put on stools and chairs that were free because the table wasn't big enough. But all that aside it was perfect. The food was appreciated, and even when I dropped the carrots on the floor, splashing honey every where and the dogs joining us to clean up, we all laughed. So even though I thought it looked a shambles, it was still, indeed, a perfect storm.

Did any of you take any photo's of Easter tables? Or any eggs or decorations you may have made. We always love to see your creations.

Why is crafting good for mental wellbeing?
Research has proven that creative activity, regardless of the medium, is helpful as a therapy, and has been prescribed to patients since the dawn of occupational therapy in the late 19th century. It can help to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. In addition, crafting has also shown to improve mental agility, improves both gross and fine motor movements, and also decrease cognitive decline. Crafting activities have a meditative quality due to their repetition, focus and need for attention, which can provide healthy distraction from other daily stresses by keeping us in the moment.

Why trauma informed?
It is well researched and documented that many mental health issues stem from trauma. Trauma is a very indvidual event and what you might consider to be traumatic might be different to the person sat next to you, and we don't know everyone's stories, so we treat everybody in our group with the assumption that they have suffered trauma, so we do not retraumatise. And remember, treating in a trauma informed way is not harmful to anyone who hasn't been affected by trauma. All our policies are trauma informed and we will explore this along our journey. Please do ask if you would like any information on this.
