Naj Na means mother house in Mayan. This project is a life long dream of Sabrina, traditional community midwife from Tulum. Having learned so much from the Mayan community she feels necessary and urgent to preserve their knowledge and she proposes to do that within a new framework, one of empowering the woman during her mothering processes and awakening the community to the importance of this.
NajNa is a project aimed at preserving Mayan knowledge, medicine, architecture, and agriculture, while empowering women in the community. The project will be led by Sabrina Speich, a traditional midwife and Ismael Aban, a Mayan artist, where they will live and spearhead this community. The project will be owned by the Osa Mayor Foundation and La Cueva de la Partera and La Escuela de Parteras, and its main objective is to create a space that promotes community living based on nurturing and creation, where women can come to give birth and midwives can train. ✨LA CUEVA HOMEBIRTH TESTIMONY✨

“The profound mystery and spirituality of birth can never be understood with the mind; they are known through the heart.”

After having an unwanted, medicated, traumatizing hospital birth in the United States that included a plethora of unnecessary medical interventions with our first child (our daughter), due partially to my lack of wisdom and disconnection with my own body, I knew this second pregnancy and birth I needed to learn much more and tune into my body (and baby) if I was to have the natural, home birth I wanted the first time around.

And through the art of surrender and rediscovering how to fully trust that my body was capable of naturally birthing our second child (our son), I was able to have my very own beautiful, completely natural, home birth experience that was once just a dream to me less than 3 months ago. This second birth experience helped me find something I didn’t know about myself; a fierce, instinctual, feminine power that lied dormant within me. Giving birth naturally and in the serenity of my own home strengthened my essence of being. Through giving birth naturally I found one more piece of who I am as a divine feminine while simultaneously healing the broken pieces left behind from my first traumatizing birth experience.

Our family gives thanks to the Most High, as well as our dynamic duo midwives, Sabrina and Belu, for the beautiful, loving, organic birth experience we were able to have here in México. For any expecting mothers or women who desire to have a natural or home birth, the greatest piece of wisdom I have to share is, “There is power in the decision to fully surrender while trusting your body’s instinctual capability to give birth without unnecessary interventions. Educate your fears and seek wisdom through the stories of all the mothers who have taken the journey on which you are about to embark.” 💜

La lactancia materna proporciona a los bebés todos los nutrientes que necesitan para crecer y que su sistema inmunológico se desarrolle plenamente.

Preparando baño de hierbas postparto… mientras hablamos de la experiencia del nacimiento, la lactancia y todas las emociones que florecen después de parir, después pasamos a la sobada y terminamos con el cierre con rebozo.

El parto es un momento muy importante en la vida de una mujer y su familia, esta contención y apapacho forma parte del acompañamiento de las parteras.
