“I lost the weight… but I gained so much more.”

I remember saying this when I got my health in order 4 years ago.

It was such a stressful period time in my life. My mood was very bad, I lacked confidence & my anxiety felt like it took over my life.

This journey is how “less stressed vet” was born. I found that when I took the steps to take care of my physical health in a way that served my body… my overall energy levels increased, my daily mood improved, I got stronger & my confidence increased. Over time my anxiety also became more manageable.

You can biohack your way to better mental health with habits that support your physical health. The nutrition, sleep habits, and movement habits matter! You can’t just “positive think” your way into a better life.

My coaching centers around this sweet spot.
Building healthy habits AND life coaching to navigate the mental blocks or self-doubt issues that may come up as you work through your goals.
You can work on mindset & that may help you… but if your body is full of inflammation with low energy… you will not be giving yourself a fighting chance.

I’m looking for 6 individuals who are tired of being stressed & tired. Who want to build a solid foundation for their health.

We will be beta testing my program & course and as a thank you for being a beta tester… this will be 100% comped.

If you are interested.

Just do the d@mn thing 💜

Our to do lists are miles long
But you can make certain things
Non-negotiable.

These should align with your bigger goals.
Focus on who you want to be in 1 year…
In 5 years.

When you do the things
you need to do.

You show yourself that
You CAN do the things.

And that you can
depend on yourself.

Self-accountability
Self-care
Self-love

That’s where the magic
happens.

What big goals are you working on right now?

Are you going to choose you?
It’s your self care Saturday reminder.
If YOU don’t choose you…
How do you expect others to show up for you.

Self care is the biggest form of self love
And
Self - respect.

Every action towards
Taking care of yourself
Compounds over time.
Start small.
Start now.

Monday….

Why does this create an automatic negative response for so many people?

I used to dread Mondays.
Actually I would dread Sunday night knowing Monday was coming.

I know that work will always be “work”… but going into the week with a mindset that does not serve you…
Sets you up to prove how sucky a Monday can be.

I teach my clients to “open up” to the idea that Mondays are neutral.
Not necessarily thinking “it’s going to be a fantastic day!”..
As I think there can be a tone of toxic positivity if we try to force a 100% positive mindset.

Life is 50/50
50% awesome
50% awful

But it’s NOT 100% awful.
There is good amongst the bad.
There is much to be grateful for.
So if you close your heart off to everything….
It’s impossible to have appreciation for the good the day throws at you.

Cultivating a neutral mindset takes practice.
A muscle you must exercise & build.
The beauty of it all is that you choose….
You choose to have an open mind.
You can also choose to stay in the monotony of sucky Mondays.
So what will you choose today?

My biggest struggle with relief work... has always been sticking to the boundaries that I set for myself.

For example:
How many shifts I want to work per week.
Per month.

This is the second time that I have transitioned to relief work in my career, and this time I was going to do it BETTER! I often joke that my boss doing relief work is such a b!t@h. She barely let me have a day off and she made me work every weekend! Of course...
It's me, hi...
I'm the problem, it's me

I have come a long way as far as learning how to set boundaries and keep them.
BUT the struggle is still there.
The urge to book another shift.
It comes from an overall desire to help....I see how shorthanded everyone is.

I also have to recognize and be real with the fact that I have long valued my self-worth by how hard I work.
That my opinions about myself are deep rooted in accomplishment and achievements.

I see this pattern among a lot of us veterinary care workers.
Perhaps this is also a reason for people overworking themselves.
Picking up extra shifts.
Not saying NO when they need to.
Sacrificing for the greater cause... AND for self-validation.

It's a cycle.
One that I am breaking
so that I can make sure I don't burn myself out again.

Trudy (my best friend and almost 11 year old Boston Terrier) had a procedure yesterday to remove two dermal masses. (Cross your fingers these are not MCTs.)
I purposely took yesterday off so that I could be with her since she gets stressed at the veterinary hospital. AND took today off so that I could be home to monitor her recovery and make sure she is comfortable.

While this is ultimately what I desired & my pup means everything to me, I found myself checking in on open shifts that I could pick up for today since she was doing so well.

I almost felt guilty for taking today off since she was recovering so well.
I had to remind myself that I need to accept being grateful for having the ability to be home. I know my time w/ her is precious & not unlimited.

If you struggle w/ overworking and overcommitting- you are not alone. It can take practice building boundaries, setting the right intentions & breaking the cycle of guilt.

Post leg day fuel ⛽️🍓

Experimenting with new recipes for you all.
Putting together a smoothie bowl takes less than 5 mins & I still got the crunch I craved without having to drink my brunch through a straw.

When my schedule is packed… I don’t have hours on end to cook & meal prep. So I try to come up with recipes that are quicker to assemble than ordering delivery. Let’s be real… I know sometimes it’s just easier to order food. Just realize the convenience of ordering food will usually end up sabotaging your health long term.

I’ve also been trying a few of the Ka’chava flavors & plan on putting together 4 smoothie bowl recipes to finish out the summer season strong 💪🏽 . Stay tuned.

When your canvas is your plate….
And your meal is a masterpiece.

There is a reason for each ingredient on this plate.
The colors represent different micronutrients…
It’s not just about macros.
And it’s definitely not the same as popping a multivitamin.

If you want good health …
You better put IN the good stuff.
The fresh stuff.
Not the junk just waiting to expire on the shelf for years…
Calories are not all equal.

More color = More antioxidants, minerals & vitamins
More variety = better gut health
More fiber = better satiety
More lean protein (2 sources here) = more muscle building

I’ve been eating this way for 3 years.
No calorie counting
No macro tracking
Just putting together these bowls like art.
It’s something I teach… help others find their way to healthier habits.
So that people realize just how much better they feel when they create meals that are just as tasty as they are beautiful 😍

Trigger warning: ⛔️ weight, body issues

Less of this…(scale stepping)
Validation through a set of numbers.

I let a number rule the way I thought about my health for so long.
The word diet… be a part of my vocabulary.

Growing up in the 80s & 90s did little to boost my confidence in my body. Fat free was the way to go. The less you weighed… the smaller you were… the healthier you were. Cardio was king 👑

3 things I learned through my journey that I carry with me into continue to keep leveling up

1. Muscle & strength are king. Want to be able to pick yourself up from the floor when you are 60… 70….80 years old? That requires strength.

2. Eat real food. I have seen a change in my brain function (less fog after eating) and digestion by sticking to this rule.

3. I’m tired of the mentality that less weight / smaller size means I’ll be happier. It’s not true. I find that I’m happiest when I’m at my strongest & my legs can carry me up a tough trail for 20+ miles.

I bring this up because as veterinary care workers… there is so much talk about mental health & wellbeing. I’m a firm believer that true health is when you take care of your whole being.

You give yourself rest…
You feed yourself good nutrition ..
You build strength as part of your self -care…
You take yourself outside for fresh air…
You build community…

It’s a whole being approach to wellness.

Today I got a dexascan to assess my body as a whole: bone density, lean muscle mass, body fat %, visceral fat % and so much more.

I want more muscle 💪🏽
I want a lower resting heart rate
I want to be able to be strong enough to pick myself off the floor as a 70 year old…
Heck I want to be the ol gal at the back of the gym hogging the squat rack at 70 😂
I want a strong body & a strong mind.

The journey continues…

The weekend cycle. I see this constantly in .

Sometimes our long week has us exhausted 🥱
It’s been that way more than I’d like to admit.
So I used to say no to EVERYTHING.
No to dinners with friends.
No to family time.
No to even really hanging out with my husband.

I wanted to shut myself in my house.
Drink all the alcohol…
And zone out.
See how many times Netflix can ask me if I’m still watching 😑

While this can sometimes be a way to cope with the tremendous stress we feel as veterinary care workers, the desire to move away from interactions can sometimes be isolating & actually work against us. It may not feel like it…because Netflix marathons can be fun, but hear me out.

This means our only interaction with the outside world is in veterinary medicine.
We limit opportunities to connect with others.
We limit time spent being creative or being curious about other things that can make us happy or more fulfilled.

So yes if you need downtime… take it.
But if you can carve out some time to just get curious about what makes you feel joy… then it’s absolutely worth it.
