📣 READ THIS!!!!

We need to give kids access to AAC (augmentative & alternative communication) early on if they are having difficulty speaking. Many parents are against these alternate methods of communication because they are 1) understandably worried about their child’s future, but also 2) are misinformed that AAC will prevent their child from verbally communicating. It’s our job as SLPs to help parents understand that COMMUNICATION is the goal in therapy and also that research suggests AAC actually increases the likelihood of verbal speech. This is my favorite analogy that helps the concept “click” for many parents- don’t just let them be, give them tools to help them be successful communicators!

Many (if not all) SLPs know that the "wait and see" approach can be hugely detrimental to a child's development. Yet, we continually get children referred to us for services at 2 years old with little to no words.

Did you know that we anticipate a child at 2 years old to have a vocabulary of 200-300 words and then a child at 3 years old to have a vocabulary of 900-1,000 words? This means that between ages 2 and 3 a child must acquire and use at least 2 new words PER DAY! When a child enters speech therapy at 2 years old with few words, they need our support as skilled and specialized professionals.

I recently took a course from Cari Ebert Seminars and was reminded of SO many important aspects of our role as SLPs in the education of not only the parents and caregivers we support but also others in related fields.

School systems, doctors, and even family members can make parents feel like speech isn’t needed for their kiddos with Apraxia when the only research evidence-practice that is proven to treat Apraxia is speech therapy. Speech therapy is not a want— it’s a necessity. 💙

Great tips!

I see you taking your kid to therapy while your friends take their kids to football or ballet.

I see you sneak out of the conversation when all your friends boast about achievements and exam notes.

I see you juggle events and meetings.

I see you sitting on the computer for hours investigating what your child needs.

I see you make a bad face when people complain about what looks like nonsense.

I see you disappear little by little but you keep going beyond for your family.

I see you pull strength from weakness with a force you didn't even dream you had.

I see you showing respect for teachers, therapists and medical professionals who help your child and help you.

Watching you wake up early in the morning to do it all again after another chaotic night.

I see you when you're on the edge of the precipice struggling to live.

I know you feel invisible, like no one notices.
But I want you to know that I see you.

I see you push forward always. I see you choose to do everything you can to give your child the best care at home, school, therapy and the doctors.
What you do matters. It's worth the struggle.

On those days when you wonder if you can make it one more minute, I want you to know I see you.

I want you to know that you are beautiful.
I want you to know it's worth it. I want you to know that you are not alone. I want you to know that love is the most important thing, and that you are the best at it.

And in those days when you see an improvement, those moments when hard work has its reward, and you can taste success, I'll see you then too.
And I'm proud of you.

Whatever day today.....you're doing it right.

Let’s talk about the importance of play! When we hear dopamine, we might just think “happy,” but did you know that dopamine plays a critical role in learning and working memory? Dopamine is released through play, through humor, and anytime there is a joyful element of surprise. It creates a heightened level of alertness and energy. I love using play and humor to keep kids engaged and having fun while they are learning! When their alertness is elevated, I like to add light obstruction or obstacles to increase opportunities for language learning. Play is great for children of all ages and can still be accomplished through online therapy!

I know I post A LOT about seeking early intervention and about average language skills pretty often here. This information is SO important to many families who may not know when the right time to get their child assessed may be. But I just want to say to the parents that are here who already know their child is delayed- I know that info can be hard to see. I know it can be a reminder of what your child is not doing. But for the kids already in intervention- progress is the goal! And it doesn’t have to be huge leaps of progress (although that would be amazing!), but sometimes seemingly small steps of progress are really huge accomplishments- and should be celebrated! ❤️
