Why Yoga for the pelvic floor?

Yoga and breath practices help to finetune the mind-body connection. And like all muscles in the body, the pelvic floor responds to stress, overactivity (holding too much tension in the muscles) and needs to be able to relax and release as well as lift and contract.

Oftentimes, we focus more on the lift of the pelvic floor with the (somewhat outdated) idea that the pelvic floor is 'weak' or 'loose' and we need things to be tight and firm, when actually we might need to bring some softness and release to the muscles instead.

When we can find that mind-body connection that Yoga facilitates, we can help the muscles to soften 👌

Add in some mindful movement, awareness and information and we can tone the pelvic floor muscles and become more mindful of what our own body needs.

In Core + Pelvic Floor Yoga we learn all of this through a 75-minute Yoga weekly class that will leave you (and your pelvic floor) feeling renewed and rejuvenated.

It will be one year tomorrow since my brother Hugh died. Hugh’s ashes are scattered in this sea, along with those of his beautiful son Ryan, who died just 7 months after him. My Dad died just before Hugh. All 3 of them, suddenly gone in the space of 10 months.

I’ve struggled to post here, not knowing how much of it to share and unable to feel anything but the loss of it all.

Grief can be an awful thing that sweeps you off your feet. It creates a chasm inside of you that you can sometimes balance on the precipice of, and sometimes fall right into. It feels like a constant, silent scream. It changes your very being; things are never the same again.

But it also gives a deeper understanding and a value on life that urges you to live more, breathe it all in, laugh, come together, hug more, and experience everything with a new appreciation of how precious our time on earth is. And you realize the importance of surrounding yourself with the best people.

Throughout it all, Yoga has given me steadiness and a connection to my heart that on the hardest days helps me to slow down and breathe.

We’ve made a trip to my brother’s home in Thailand to commemorate him, one year after he died. We’re in paradise, holding such bittersweet emotions with other family members here. But we are together, and right now that is everything 🙏🏻

In this gentle yoga class, we will use asana to improve vitality, work toward better joint health, increase mobility, add flexibility, find stress & anxiety reduction with our breath, improve balance, and introduce regular movement & mindfulness.

This is a space to feel welcomed, comfortable, and find movement within your range of motion.

In Yoga for Healthy Aging we use the wall, yoga straps, yoga blocks and sometimes chairs to explore poses in our own bodies. We love to prop!

→ Yoga for Healthy Aging is a gentle yoga class for older beginners.

🌷 Yoga has so many health benefits and in this class, we will use yoga postures and breath work to build strength, improve balance, maintain mobility in the body and the joints, and more!

🌷 Through mindful movement, you will lessen stress and anxiety and feel all the benefits of introducing regular movement and mindfulness to your life.

🌷 Most suitable to clients over 55, this is a space to feel welcomed, comfortable and find movement within your own range of motion.

In the week since Sineád O'Connor passed away, there has been such an outpouring of grief and love - much of which I am sure she never could have imagined.

Sinéad improved my life immeasurably when she released Nothing Compares 2 U - I was a tween then and finally (blissfully!) non-Irish people understood how to pronounce my first name.

Then in 2008 I married Mr O'Connor to boot, and I've loved all the conversations that having her full name provokes - it's an icebreaker but also highlighted that many people did see the real person behind the headlines. I remember a barista in a Starbucks going wild when I showed him my ID to prove I actually did have that last name. There was so much appreciation for her, I can only imagine the responses she got in person.

Contrary to reactions though - I'm not the only Sinéad O'Connor even in Calgary - I'm not even the only one in my family. It's not a rare name in Ireland so I'm sure there are many of us with this shared experience. And I'm sure they, too, have disappointed many a hotel concierge and restaurant when they turn up for their bookings 😆

So I owe Sinéad a debt of gratitude for all the joy that she has brought me just for sharing her name, and I have a lot of respect for her fearlessness and vulnerability. I only wish I had expressed more of that while she was here with us. Rest in peace, Sinéad.

*Personal Update*

My lovely Dad passed away recently in Manchester, UK.

The last 11 months have included lots of travel from Calgary to Manchester and Ireland. There have been class cancellations and I’ve relied on a couple of wonderful colleagues to sub classes so that I could be with him and make more memories.

My heartfelt thanks to my clients who have rolled with the changes, and offered hugs and kind words.

And more heartfelt thanks to friends and colleagues in the yoga world for the support, hugs (both virtual and in person!) and the love.

It is truly at the worst of times that you understand what kindness really is, and I am so grateful for my little business and it’s community of incredible people.

Core + Pelvic Floor Yoga is back - starting on October 27th at the Beach Club!

This yoga class is for you if:
🎯 You want to learn how to reconnect to, and re-tone, your pelvic floor muscles;
🎯 You love yoga - or want to try yoga for the first time;
🎯 You want to strengthen your core and learn postural adjustments for continued core development;
🎯 You want additional online resources to continue your practice at home; or
🎯 You want a Thursday evening yoga class that leads you gently into your weekend!

Sinéad of is a yoga teacher with a pelvic floor specialism and in this class, you can learn more about how to improve common pelvic floor issues like ~

→ Peeing unintentionally (leaking when you cough/sneeze/put the key in the door)
→ Diastasis Recti (ongoing abdominal separation)
→ Low back pain or hip pain
→ Core feels 'noodly'
→ Pelvic Organ Prolapse OR
→ If you've been doing your Kegels to no avail and are feeling lost, frustrated and on the verge of seeking surgery.

I've been low-key on socials recently but I am still here 👋🏽

Earlier this year we got some really difficult family news and it’s meant my focus has been back in the UK a lot.

I am still here in the background and have some exciting updates coming for Fall sessions (even though I still can’t believe it is mid-June!) and although I will be traveling back to the UK a few times later this year, I will work my trips around teaching my passions from September onwards - core + pelvic floor yoga, Mama & Babe and Yoga for Healthy Aging!

I have been grounding myself in gratitude for the many things that bring meaning and joy to my life ~

🙏🏻 Grateful for a more time to make memories
🙏🏻 Grateful for daily opportunities to say ‘I love you’
🙏🏻 Grateful to the most incredible friends for unending and compassionate support
🙏🏻 Grateful beyond measure to family back in the UK, holding down the fort.

And gratitude for my yoga family, my flexible job (no pun intended!) and the colleagues that step in to keep my classes running when needed.

Flashback picture to a recent trip back home, one of the highlights was a walk down the Coronation Street cobbles and snaffling this apron in the gift shop. If you know, you know!

I've been thinking of the community in Buffalo, New York and in particular a call to action from a colleague and local resident Danait Berhe on how to be part of the change, right now (and Danait referred to this Brené Brown quote which I had never heard before).
