Everyone’s sensory system is unique, but there’s one “rule” we like to follow in OT:

Always complete a proprioceptive-based activity after a vestibular-based activity!

Vestibular input (like spinning or swinging) can be alerting—and sometimes even overstimulating.
Proprioceptive activities (like pushing, pulling, or climbing) are typically calming for the nervous system.

So, pairing the two can help bring the body back to balance.

Here’s what that might look like:

➡️ Swing then climb
➡️ Go down a hill then slow ride with animals
➡️ Spin on a swing then slide through a tunnel
➡️ Run and jump and crash

This sequence can support regulation and reduce feelings of overstimulation.

Think of it like this:
Vestibular = 🚀
Proprioception = 🧸

It’s all about helping little bodies find balance

“Why can my child focus for hours on a screen, but not on homework or classwork?”
It’s one of the most common questions I get — and the answer might surprise you!

Screens are designed to keep us hooked — with fast-moving visuals, sounds, and instant rewards. For kids, especially those with attention or sensory needs, this kind of stimulation can be much easier to focus on than everyday tasks that require sustained effort and slower rewards.

If you’ve been wondering the same thing and noticed this pattern, know that you’re not alone — and there are ways to support your child’s focus and attention in a balanced, healthy way.

Let’s work together to make concentration feel possible — and even enjoyable.
Let’s nurture focus without frustration. 💛

Mastering new skills takes time, and repetition is key! 🧠✨ Whether it’s balancing, or riding a bike, keep the practice engaging and varied for the best results. Remember, repetition doesn’t mean doing the same thing over and over—mix it up to keep those little brains growing and learning! 💪

✨ Low tone? High tone? Let’s talk about what that really means.
Muscle tone isn’t about strength — it’s about how muscles feel and respond at rest.
Understanding your child’s tone can help explain their posture, movement, and even how they play.
Swipe through to learn what muscle tone is, how it differs from strength, and what signs to look out for. 💪🧠

💙World Autism Awareness Day 💙

Today, we recognize the importance of seeing the child first—not the diagnosis. Autism is just one part of who they are, but it does not define them. Every child has their own strengths, challenges, and unique way of experiencing the world.

As a pediatric occupational therapist, I believe in fostering understanding, respect, and inclusion. It’s not about changing the child—it’s about supporting them in a way that works for them.

Let’s move beyond awareness to true acceptance. Let’s listen, learn, and create spaces where all children feel valued and included. 💙♾️

🫸 Why Is My Child Hitting or Biting at School? And What to Do When It Happens

As an occupational therapist, I often hear from parents concerned about their child hitting or biting others at school. This behavior can be worrying, but it’s important to remember that it is often a way for children to communicate, especially when they may not have the words to express themselves.

If your child is struggling with hitting or biting, OT can help identify the underlying causes and provide strategies that work for your child’s individual needs.

💬 Have you experienced this with your child? What strategies have been helpful for you? Let’s discuss and share ideas!

🕒 How Long Will My Child Need Occupational Therapy?

Every child is unique, so the length of OT varies based on their needs, progress, and goals. Here’s what to consider:

✅ Severity of Challenges – Some children need short-term support, while others require ongoing therapy.
✅ Consistency – Regular attendance and home practice can speed up progress.
✅ Individual Goals – OT is goal-focused! Once your child masters their goals, therapy may end or shift focus.
✅ Progress Rate – Every child develops at their own pace. Some improvements happen quickly, while others take time.

Your OT will regularly review progress and adjust the plan accordingly! 💡

Some kids are constantly jumping, spinning, crashing, or seeking deep pressure—not because they’re being “wild,” but because their bodies need more sensory input to feel regulated. Instead of seeing it as “hyperactivity” or “misbehavior,” we can recognize their unique sensory needs and support them in meaningful ways!

The more we understand their behavior, the more we can support their sensory needs—and that’s how they thrive! 🌟

Does this sound like a child you know? Let’s create a world where sensory needs are met, not misunderstood! 💙
