Japan has officially activated its first megawatt-scale tidal turbine — the AR1100 — beneath the Naru Strait. Built by Proteus Marine Renewables, this beast generates 1.1 MW of clean power by capturing steady ocean currents. It’s already supplying green electricity to the Goto Islands.
The AR1100 isn’t just big — it’s smart. It auto-adjusts its blades in real-time, links directly to the grid, and runs nonstop beneath the surface with zero emissions. And this isn’t a first-time flex: Proteus has done it before in the UK — now they’re proving tidal power works in Japan too.
With tidal tech expanding across Scotland, France, and the U.S., this project cements Japan’s role in the race for next-gen renewable energy.
