☀️ Hot weather warning: Stay safe near open water 🚫🌊
With temperatures rising this week, we know how tempting it can be to cool off in rivers, lakes, reservoirs or quarries. But please — do not swim in open water.
Every year, lives are tragically lost. Here in Rotherham, we still remember Sam, who sadly died after swimming in open water. His loss is a heartbreaking reminder of just how dangerous it can be.
Even on the hottest days:
⚠️ The water is often much colder than it looks – cold water shock can happen instantly.
⚠️ Hidden currents, weeds, and debris can pull you under.
⚠️ Deep water may hide sudden drop-offs, sharp objects, or strong underwater flows.
⚠️ You may not be able to climb out easily due to slippery banks or steep sides.
👉 If you see someone in difficulty in open water:
• 📞 Call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire & Rescue Service.
• 📢 Shout to them to keep calm and float on their back.
• 🚫 Do not enter the water yourself — you could become another casualty.
• 📦 If possible, throw them something that floats.
Stay safe. Enjoy the sunshine responsibly — and always respect the water.
