October 10th - World Mental Health Day. 1 in 4 adults are currently living with a mental illness - many of whom you would never know are struggling. Mental health is health. You are loved, worthy, capable, deserving, you belong, and you are not alone. It’s okay to not be okay, and it’s okay to ask for help. Your feelings are valid. I’m here for you and I’m sending you love šŸ§ šŸ¤

I’ve been real M.I.A on here and likely will be frequently since I’ve started my Masters program! Popping in to share a reminder with you all (and myself)- it’s okay to have big feelings. I’m a sensitive soul, and it’s okay to be a big feeler. It makes us great humans, lovers, friends, coworkers, etc. Know that your feelings are valid, ride them out, and also allow yourself to release things, too. šŸ•Š

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! I’ve been a bit MIA on here due to my own mental health struggles, but I’m thankful for and science (aka medication) that has been helping me cope and heal. Mental illness is often silent / invisible- and we’d never know someone was fighting their battles internally unless they share those intimate conversations with others. What we CAN do is understand that around 1 in 5 adults and around 1 in 3 children / adolescents are currently experiencing a mental illness(es). We can share our experiences to create and open up conversations about mental health, we can extend our empathy, we can choose kindness every single day, we can encourage others to reach out for help from professionals, and we can help educate others by sharing mental health information and resources. It feels very fitting that May is my birth month, the month of something I’m incredibly passionate about (mental health). You’re not alone. There is support and resources available to help you. I’m here with you and for you. I admire your strength, bravery, and courage. šŸ¤

Where are my people who are constantly worrying about the future and / or the unknown? šŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø It’s very common, and I’ll say that as much as I have tried to cope with this, I haven’t had a whole lot of success. I’m looking into finding a new therapist possibly, and I’ll be trying some other techniques to cope with this next time it comes up (so probably tomorrow or sometime soon). You’re not alone. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

02/04/2022

In 2021, World Autism Awareness Month was changed to World Autism Acceptance Month. This is a big deal- as we should not only be aware of Autism, but we should strive on an individual and societal level to include Autistics / individuals with Autism in our communities and in our lives. Research is very equally divided on what term to use, as most articles I’ve seen will include that individuals diagnosed with Autism refer to themselves as Autistic whereas professionals refer to those same individuals as ā€œindividuals with Autismā€. I want to include both terms, as I cannot speak for each individual in this population on what term is preferred.

In a USA Today article, I read this paragraph: "Awareness is knowing that somebody has autism," Banks said. "Acceptance is when you include (a person with autism) in your activities. Help (them) to develop in that community and get that sense of connection to other people." 1 in 44 children are diagnosed with Autism and about 2% of the adult population in the US have been diagnosed with Autism. Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder that impairs an individuals’ ability to communicate and interact. We must seek to understand, accept, and include Autistic individuals šŸ’™

I got accepted into my Masters program to become a Social Worker (woohoo!!) so I’m now one step closer to becoming a LCSW! I found a lot of great information on Goodtherapy.org regarding what social workers do and how they may be involved with mental health! Social workers may work in a large variety of positions in roles, not just including the mental health field! Swipe to learn more šŸ‘‰šŸ½

There are many great benefits of exercise for mental health, and I have only listed a few of these wonderful benefits. Exercise (which can be as simple as walking) has great benefits for mental illnesses, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more. It can be difficult to move your body when living with a mental illness, and I’m a firm believer in listening to your body when you need to rest and recover. On the other hand, I also try to push myself (to an extent) when I know that moving my body will benefit me more than not. I challenge you to move your body for atleast 10 minutes today in whatever way you choose- whether it is yoga, dance, going to the gym, walking outside / walking your dog, or whatever you’d like.

It’s a new year, and while I get discouraged by setting too broad of goals for the year, one thing I want to focus on is finding a therapist here in UT. I feel like this page has been losing interactions / maybe not showing up on peoples’ feeds, so it’s my goal to boost engagement so that my content can reach those who may need it! Lots of improvement and work to be done for 2022, let’s all heal together!

šŸ›‘ Stop scrolling! It’s time for a mental health check-in. 1) How are you feeling today on a scale of 1-10? Maybe you’re having a great day or maybe you feel anxious, depressed, tired, or any other emotion / physical state. It’s important to also know that mental illness often shows itself through physical symptoms such as headaches, body pains, stomach problems, rashes, appetite changes, and more. When you ask yourself how you’re doing- take note of these things as well too! You can do this mentally or write it in your notes. 2) what’s been worrying you lately? It may seem big or small- but they matter equally. Take notes of what is on your plate and what is impacting you so that you can help yourself to tackle what may be worrying you! 3) What have you done to bring yourself happiness lately? Ask yourself this question daily, you’d be shocked by how often we put ourselves on the back burner. Do something for YOU today and everyday- whether it be big or small. 4) Many times, we may have more resources than we realize. This can look like close contacts to communicate with, a therapist, resources online, and the list continues / changes for everyone! If you don’t think you have resources, please find someone who you can reach out to as needed. I’m here for you, and there are many great resources online! 5) This goes along with #3, but today I want you to choose something that brings you happiness and that will make you feel good, and complete it! 6) what can you do for your mental health today / in the next week / this month? This could look like refilling a prescription, speaking with a therapist, going for a walk / exercising, reaching out for help from someone, researching where to go from here, and more. Small steps are big steps, because it means you’re taking action! Save this post to look back on each week or even daily to do a mental health check-in!

Holidays can be a reminder of trauma, grief, sadness, and may bring a variety of emotions for some individuals. Please remember to check in on others during the holiday seasons- especially with the holidays that are coming within the next month or so. I am sending my love and hugs to anyone who may have a hard time during the holidays- and please know that my messages are always open for anyone who wants to talk. I’m here for you šŸ¤

Social anxiety- what is it? It isn’t just pre-test jitters, not wanting to see an ex in public, or ā€œbeing shyā€. It’s an intense feeling of distress and anxiety that come from performance / social situations! I’m thankful for a partner who pushes me to get out of my comfort zone to meet and hang out with new people, but I’d be lying if I said it isn’t really hard for me. Dyl will now only tell me about plans the day-of because it used to send me into panic attacks / an anxious mess if I knew about social events and gatherings any time before the day-of.

If you experience social anxiety disorder, you are not alone! About 7% of adults experience social anxiety disorder in the US. My DM’s are open if you’d like to talk more about this (but again- I’m not a licensed professional so talk to someone who is licensed for diagnosis / treatment) šŸ¤

TW: Domestic violence / domestic abuse. I finished Maid on Monday and I’ve been researching a lot about DV because I feel like it’s something I had never learned very much about. It is more common than we may realize, but it is often hidden from others. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please reach out to a licensed professional for help. There are many resources available for each state, and I found many resources available when typing in ā€œdomestic violence resourcesā€ that were located near me. If you type this in with your state or city, resources will be available for your location. Sending you so much love if you or someone you know is in this difficult position. šŸ¤

ā€œImposter syndrome, also called perceived fraudulence, involves feelings of self-doubt and personal incompetence that persist despite your education, experience, and accomplishmentsā€. This impacts many of us on a daily basis, even if you may not have realized it! Imposter syndrome can impact anyone- no matter your age, competency, skill level, education level, job title, etc. Some common signs include self-doubt, inability to realistically assess your competency and skills, attributing your success to external factors, fear that you won’t live up to expectations, overachieving, and self-sabotage.

Raise your hand if you compare yourself to others: šŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø Many of us are guilty of doing so, and it’s easy to let our thoughts get the best of us. In my opinion, comparison is normal. It can be a good thing because it helps us strive to reach our full potential. However, it can also be damaging when it occurs too frequently. When individuals compare themselves often, it is connected to low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, envy, low confidence, and more. You are unique and you offer unique qualities, perspectives, and experiences to the world- don’t dim your light.

Today is and today we spend extra time sharing about things that we should be sharing / speaking about EVERY day. Our world needs more support and understanding regarding mental health. We must help educate ourselves and others about mental health and mental illness, and get rid of judgement and negative perceptions that exist regarding mental health. May our society and world become more accepting, and may we always push ourselves and others to do and be better. You are not alone. You are loved. You are enough, as you are in this moment right now. You are here for a reason. You make the world a better place. It is okay to not be okay.

I think most of us have felt alone before, some maybe more than others. I’ve struggled with this a lot since moving from my home town in 2017 and losing a lot of old friendships while growing up, and I’ve experienced it as I’ve lived in Utah away from family. It can be hard to put yourself out there and make new friends, but there are other ways to combat feelings of loneliness other than doing things that may be too outside of your comfort zone. For example, volunteer somewhere locally! This is a wonderful way to pass time while doing something productive that also benefits others in your community! I’m here if you are feeling alone and need a friend to speak with. Even if we have never talked- my DM’s are always open.

Music is one of my go-to’s when I need help getting out of a tough space or when I feel myself slipping into one. These songs each talk about mental health in one way or another. I love that we have so many ways to share our experiences with mental health and to raise awareness, and music is just one of the ways to break the stigma. What are some of the songs that help you when you’re struggling? I’d love to hear them below and I’ll make a playlist and include the songs you share.

Please stay here on earth. Choose life. Choose to live. Choose to continue your fight. There are many reasons that individuals may choose death by su***de, or consider this option. But I need you to know- someone needs you here in this world. A Mom, sibling, neighbor, coworker, boss, a random customer from your job, a stranger you ran into on the street who loved your interaction together. I need you here. And I need you to continue to choose life because you make a difference.

Thinking is often automatic, but what do you do if those thoughts are negative? Negative thinking can be grouped / labeled by distortions, listed in these graphics. Distortions are simply the different negative thought patterns that we participate in. If we don’t actively work to reduce or fix our negative thought patterns, they continue and impact our lives in negative ways, damaging our mental health.

TW: Su***de. September is ***deawarenesspreventionmonth and this topic can be triggering for many. I have shared resources previously, but today I found more risk factors and warning signs from the Su***de Prevention Lifeline and I wanted to share some here. We may not always be able to detect or stop someone from attempting or completing su***de, but we can do our best to ensure that everyone we come across is treated with kindness, respect, and that they are made to feel wanted and needed in this world. We can help raise awareness and prevent individuals from attempting / completing su***de by offering options for support services, opening conversation about su***de, reducing access to means of self-harm, and by showing that we care and offering our support. I want to repeat- if someone you know has attempted or completed su***de, it is not your fault and has nothing to do with you. We can try to prevent su***de, but it may not always be successful. That does not make it your fault.

The way you talk to yourself matters! If you wouldn’t say it to someone else, don’t say it to yourself. You deserve the same level of compassion that you give to others! Stop labeling yourself. We all make mistakes and no human is perfect. You are not a ā€œbad personā€, a ā€œfailureā€, or any of the other things you label yourself as. Try reminding yourself of the opposite. Instead of beating yourself up over something that happened or whatever your negative self talk may be associated with- oppose those thoughts with truth and reality. The more we focus on positive self talk, the better we feel about ourselves and we will also notice more positivity around us.

Aerophobia: the fear of flying. Being from Alaska, I’ve spent my entire life flying several times a year. While this is a huge honor and something I’m grateful for (since not everyone has access to traveling and flying), it’s also been something I’ve had to work through for more than 6 years now. To be honest, I used to medicate before flying and I would take Benadryl and any OTC meds that might make me tired enough to get through the flight. I understand this isn’t the best way of working through this, and I now have other ways I handle this! On the second slide I listed some of the things I have done to prepare myself for flying. If you have anything that helps you travel with comfort and with ease, please share below!

Being in a relationship with someone or being the person with a mental illness in a relationship, can be incredibly difficult. Mental illness looks different for everyone, which means support looks different across the table. Here are a few ways that you can support your partner no matter their diagnosis. I always want to mention how important it is to also take care of YOU. You matter and your mental health matters, so please don’t feel like you have to dig yourself into a hole while caring for others. Practice self care (or maybe practice this with your partner so you both are taking care of yourselves), ensure that you have support for you as well, and remember that symptoms of various mental illnesses are not a direct attack on you as a person. There can be difficult symptoms with mental illnesses, and it can hard for an individual to control these or they may not explain them to you / they may not understand the symptoms themself. A person with a mental illness is still just that- a person, and all humans deserve love, compassion, care, and empathy.

I saw a therapist in college who once ā€œprescribedā€ me gratitude journaling. I was given specific instructions, and I remember thinking in my head ā€œhow is this supposed to help my anxiety and depression?ā€ Well, it did. When you are in a mind set of constantly focusing on the negative, that’s all you will see. I’ve seen memes and posts on social media recently about how you see a specific car a lot more frequently when you’re thinking about it. And the same applies to gratitude- it’ll become automatic and you’ll start to notice the good in every single day when it’s what you’re focusing on. No- it’s not a ā€œcureā€ and it won’t help overnight but it is proven to work!

On Wednesday evening I lost my hamster, Bristol. It feels weird for me to tell people that I lost my hamster and to be so emotionally impacted by her passing. But what people don’t know or didn’t see, are the many ways she improved my mental health. Pets are great for MANY reasons, but among those reasons are ways that they help our mental health.

Setting boundaries- one of my biggest flaws. It’s important to understand that boundaries are created to protect yourself (including your mental health!) Boundaries can look different for everyone; but the graphic lists a few that are helpful for us all to add to our list! People who are meant to be in your life should accept and support your boundaries.

Rewatching TV shows and movies is one of my go-to activities when I am struggling with anxiety and / or depression. Some days are a lot harder for me mentally, emotionally, mentally, and physically when it comes to mental health, and having a TV show or movie that I’ve already seen playing in the background helps bring me a sense of comfort. A couple of my go-to movies are Coraline, Bee Movie, and Zootopia!

So excited to be *finally* making time for myself to slow down and get into hobbies + things I’ve been wanting to do. I’m finally getting into this book (Transforming Anxiety: The Heartmath Solution for Overcoming Fear and Worry and Creating Serenity by Doc Childre and Deborah Rozman, Ph.D.) and I’m mind blown by how much I’ve learned and I’m only on page 23! I’ve done a lot to boost my mental health through the years (pharmacology, psychotherapy, and a lot of other things here and there) but I haven’t read very many books for my own leisure. I’m dedicated to always healing and working on myself, and also to learning continuously to help myself in the future as I become a therapist myself. This is already a great read, and I would recommend it to anyone living with anxiety disorders and / or depression (but also it’s just a great read- so I’d recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about this topic!)

18/07/2021

It is all too common for individuals with a mental illness to sweep their symptoms under the rug and to continue their lives as if nothing is wrong. Would you do this if you had the flu, a cold, or any other sickness? A few may say yes, but most individuals will respond to their sickness by resting, hydrating, watching a favorite TV show or other low key activities, and more. The same idea applies to your mental health, which is just as important as your physical health. If you are struggling with your mental health, take a day to rest, hydrate, do your favorite activities, and give yourself a break from things that require excessive time and energy. You deserve a break and time to replenish your body & mind!
