I was grateful to share my views on Pride on the Diabetech podcast!

I've always found a connection between my type 1 diabetes pride and being proud for who I am, a gay man. In honor of Pride Month, I spoke with a diabetes educator about how diabetics can spread their pride and educate others as well as its comparisons to being gay. Subscribe to this podcast for new....

A huge thank you to those who get it. And acceptance and forgiveness for those who don’t.
Remember advocate to those you need to educate those who sincerely care to learn and the rest let them go on by.

When we can disconnect our morality from our medical needs we reach a sort of diabetes nirvana!

When we can disconnect our morality from our medical needs we reach a sort of diabetes nirvana!

Why is it so hard to feel okay about the amount of insulin our kids’ use?
--
In “Still the World’s Worst Diabetes Mom” I share how my son’s insulin needs seemed to skyrocket overnight and how we found success with the "untethered" method of pumping.
--
“When Benny was eleven and in sixth grade, he had his highest A1C since diagnosis. I’m not proud of my reaction; I burst into tears! Was the endo going to yell at me? Or give Benny a stern lecture?
--
Dr. V laughed. “Welcome to puberty,” he said to Benny. “Don’t worry about your mom. She’s going to be just fine.” He took out the pump and cranked up all the settings. Dr. V added that Benny’s insulin needs would most likely go back down when he came out of puberty.
--
That all made sense to me and helped me feel better. But what still frustrated me was that we had changed nothing. Benny wasn’t perfect, but we’d never asked him to be. This wasn’t about a change in behavior or attitude. It was about a tremendous change in his body that he couldn’t control—that I couldn’t control.
--
It’s hard to overstate how big these changes were and how quickly they seemed to happen. Remember, Benny was diagnosed at twenty-three months. I vividly remember trying to draw up a quarter unit of insulin in a syringe only marked to half units. When we switched to an insulin pump, his hourly basal rate was0.025 units. We chose that first pump because it could dose in units that tiny. To watch that tick up to one full unit was dramatic—or so I thought.
--
Lots of people say “they need what they need,” and that’s true; if Benny didn’t have diabetes, his pancreas would just naturally be pumping out elephant-sized doses of insulin.
--
There is no moral value in how much insulin you or your child uses. Repeat that. Write it out and tape it on the bathroom mirror if you need to. There is nothing “good” about using less insulin or “bad” about using more. It’s about using what you and your health team determine is right for your child.“
