In this video, I explore this question, with a focus on a powerful Coherence Therapy method called "symptom deprivation." While no technique is entirely foolproof, symptom deprivation truly comes close, standing out as one of the most reliable and time-tested approaches to uncover hidden emotional learnings and schemas that fuel challenges like procrastination and low self-worth.

Here’s why it’s so effective: when we are ready to face a core issue in our life—which is often buried outside of everyday awareness—symptom deprivation helps us bring to the surface the deeply held beliefs or suppressed emotions that are themselves the deeper level of suffering. By imagining life without the tactics we use to mask or avoid these deeper sufferings, this technique creates space for deeper emotional truths to emerge directly into conscious awareness—without the need for any analysis or interpretation.

For example, if we imagine moving forward with a task instead of procrastinating (depriving ourselves of the procrastination symptom - a tactic we use to avoid anxiety or other discomfort), this simple practice can viscerally reveal (for example) the impossible standards we may have held ourselves to as children, and how these standards served a survival or connection-related purpose - and that these standards are still intact today.

Symptom deprivation requires introspection, self-compassion, and at times, professional support if knowing or integrating something about our inner life feels overwhelming. The effectiveness and simplicity of symptom deprivation lie in the way it invites the nonverbal, feeling level of the mind to reveal its own contents naturally, and that we are inviting these contents into awareness without forcing anything, and without counteracting or bypassing.

...To be a contributing author in a new psychotherapy textbook.

I'm very happy to announce that the new edition of Unlocking the Emotional Brain was released April 22nd both in paperback and e-book editions.

I am a contributing author in Chapter 21, entitled: "Life in the Stranglehold of Rules: Using Meditative Experience for Ending Insecure Attachment within Coherence Therapy." This chapter features a summary of seven sessions over the course of a year with my client, "Jane".

Central in our work together were practices from the Realization Process, including core-to-core attunements and attuning to unitive consciousness. The chapter helps to illustrate how embodied meditation practices can assist in healing and dispelling lifelong threads of attachment trauma.

The account in Chapter 21 details Jane's process of resolving ongoing anxious felt need to "follow the rules" - an imprint she experienced for her whole adult life, left over from a childhood spent with authoritarian and narcissistic caregivers. The chapter also discusses what some of the limitations of meditative experiences are, in the context of psychological healing - i.e, how they do not, in and of themselves, resolve all psychological traumas or self-limiting patterns (a whole book could be written on this topic alone).

The following are two reviews about Unlocking the Emotional Brain, 2nd Edition:

“Ecker, Ticic, and Hulley have outdone themselves in expanding and enhancing a book that is already considered by many a modern classic in the field. The first edition of this book influenced countless therapists around the world. I suspect this second edition is destined to have an even greater impact.”

- Alexandre Vaz, PhD, director of training, Sentio Counseling Center, and editor of the APA series The Essentials of Deliberate Practice

“The first edition of Unlocking the Emotional Brain has been widely and rightly celebrated for its groundbreaking, integrative clinical framework, and this new edition offers the reader all that and even more. All psychotherapists and clinical researchers can find tremendous value in the clarity of this book’s teaching of the therapeutic power and unifying reach of memory reconsolidation. With its publication, the field of psychotherapy has made a significant, evolutionary, and transformative leap forward.”

- David S. Elliott, PhD, co-author of Attachment Disturbances in Adults

You can order Unlocking the Emotional Brain from Routledge's website, here: https://www.routledge.com/Unlocking-the-Emotional-Brain-Memory-Reconsolidation-and-the-Psychotherapy-of-Transformational-Change/Ecker-Ticic-Hulley/p/book/9781032139128. Although written for the psychotherapy field, this book is clearly composed and accessible to anyone looking to get a deeper understanding of how transformative therapy actually works. Although not a book primarily "spiritual" in nature, Chapter 21 does focus on how nondual practices can factor into one's own journey towards healing and wholeness. If you end up purchasing the book and have any questions or feedback, I'd love to know!
