Well what a year it has been. Completing my studies, registering as a counsellor, staring a new business, starting a new job (part time) 😮💨. The transition from full time mum and student to full time mum, business owner and womens health advocates has been hard, but not in the ways I would have expected. The feelings of intense guilt that I had in the beginning were difficult to manage. This is common for a lot of mums returning to work. The key for me has been balance, doing both in manageable amounts. I will be taking the next couple of months off to immerse myself in children, Christmas, and summer 🤞🏻 I will still try to keep some balance by doing some volunteering hours and making sure I get some #selfcare. Happy Christmas to everyone. See you in February Maria 💕🎄🌞
Self care is so important. Try to prioritise at least 5 mins a day that is all about you. Maybe you could meditate, write in your journal or listen to a podcast. There is no right thing to do, it’s about whatever works for you. You may find a values exercise helps you to connect your core values to an activity. #selfcare #stress #stressrelief #meditation #journaling #podcast #mums #dads #parents #mentalhealth #counselling www.mummymatterscounselling.com

You are not alone.
Roughly 20% of pregnant mothers experience moderate to severe symptoms of depression or anxiety.
Pregnant mothers are often told to chalk their symptoms up to hormones, “baby blues,” or being tired.
They often don’t realize that they might need help working through these concerns.
Talking to a perinatal mental health specialist can help–even before your baby is born.

When should you have a mental health assessment?
Our answer would be to be continuously assessing your mental health with a professional through the perinatal period, but research shows that 60% of PNDA sufferers show signs in the first 6 weeks after giving birth.

It is common and very normal to feel overwhelmed as a parents. Here are some reason why.
Becoming a parent is a complex developmental process and stage in our lives. It can take a moment to get used to it.
Your reality of parenthood does not match your expectations.
You need more support. In this individualistic culture we live in, we often are going it alone. If you do not have close family to help you, find your tribe of support people in other ways.
You may still be processing trauma, grief, and/or loss.
You are having a sensory overload. Babies come with a lot of new and often louder sensory triggers we are not used to having.

Many new parents need more time to bond. Bonding is when you develop feelings of unconditional love for your newborn. Often, bonding happens gradually over the baby's first year of life. So if you don't feel these strong feelings of closeness in the first days or weeks after birth, that's normal.
Clare - "I did not get that instant feeling of love or bonding with my first baby. It worried me and I would wonder what was wrong with me. Over time the bond grew and the love came. I realised that I had been through a lot during her birth and my own natural defences and protective instincts took over and blocked these instant feelings. Once I felt safe and secure in my home environment with support the block moved and I could allow the natural feelings of love and bonding to come through."

Mental health is health, and like women's physical health is is often at the bottom of a long list of priorities, especially for mums. How often have you though "Oh I will go to the GP and get that checked out", only for something to come up and you never get around to it.
We know that 1 in 5 expectant and new mums will experience anxiety and depression but only a small portion of these women will seek help.

When you are used to having a full social calendar, packed with seeing friends, work events, and date nights, it can be a bit of a shock to the system when some days the only people you see are your baby, partner and if your are lucky the postman.
This can be very draining on your mental health, but you do not have to just accept it as part of motherhood.
Connection to others is crucial to good mental health. Here are soon things you can do.
1. Go for a walk, you never know who you might see.
2. Go to your mothers group sessions.
3. Facetime someone, rather than call.
4. Join a support group.
5. Speak to a registered counsellor.
