How do we learn to sit in discomfort?

Try to stop chasing fleeting moments of joy and start embracing your journey with purpose. Discomfort is inevitable, but it's also where growth happens. Instead of questioning "why," let's ask ourselves "what." What can we learn? What can we overcome? What can we achieve?

On the latest episode of The Virtual Couch Podcast, I'm exploring the intricate balance that defines successful partnerships: the harmony between deep emotional connections with your partner and the pursuit of individual growth.

Drawing from the principles of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Crucible Approach, with an emphasis on self-differentiation, I'm sharing my own growth experience as a couples therapist over the past 15 years and how I've learned these two aspects—often seen as opposing forces—can complement and enhance each other within a relationship and provide therapists with a more robust toolkit to use when working with couples with a variety of attachment styles and backgrounds. You may recognize these two incredibly talented people as guests on my podcast, but did you know?... They are also part of my team!

Meet Marla Christensen, Marriage & Family Therapist Associate, AMFT, APCC and Nate Christensen, LPC Intern, MA, APCC.

Marla and Nate are both my associates—which means they are real-life therapists gaining clinical hours before passing their state licensing examinations. During this period of their careers, they must work under a clinical supervisor (played by yours truly). I meet with them both weekly to discuss cases.

Truth be told, I was never going to have associates—but I also never knew there would be associates like Nate and Marla Christensen. They are truly called to do what they do, and I give them my highest endorsement. (And, yes, they are a married couple in case you were trying to guess between spouse or sibling.)

My point here is that if you’re looking for a good therapist who may have a little bit of availability and who is being trained in all things ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy), the 4 Pillars of a Connected Conversation, EFT, and more, let me know and I can put you in touch with them.

Today on The Virtual Couch Podcast, I welcome Kurt Francom, the executive director and podcast host of Leading Saints. Kurt's first book, "Is God Disappointed in Me: Removing Shame From the Gospel of Grace," is available on Amazon. In this work, Kurt delves into the intricate concepts of ego and identity—exploring the notion of a healthy ego, the pervasive quest for validation, and how living for an identity differs fundamentally from living from an identity that has been validated by divine grace.

Podcast hijinks ensue this episode when I confront Kurt about finding out about his book via a third party—forcing me to concoct an entire narrative about our "supposed" friendship and casting Kurt as the unwitting villain. Miscommunications are unraveled, peace is restored, and I think you'll find a lot of great (and fun!) discussion between friends in this episode.
