Success Story submitted by Kaoutar Yartaoui of the KDHE:
Building Safe, Walkable Paths to a Healthier Stanton County
In Stanton County, Kansas, health begins not just at the clinic but on the sidewalk.
Since August 2024, the Stanton County Health Coalition, a Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) grantee, has been working alongside the City of Johnson to make the community safer and more walkable especially for children and families. Supported by CDRR grant funding, the coalition implemented a semi-permanent school zone and Main Street crossing, taking meaningful steps to protect young pedestrians and encourage physical activity.
This project is the result of strong collaboration. The coalition and the city came together to paint crossings, prioritize objectives within the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) plan, and involve both civic leaders and community voices in the process. In November, the county commissioners approved a priority project list and finalized a tree plan to bring shade and beauty to the local walking trail.
One unexpected challenge was the lack of a water source for the new trees. Thanks to continued dialogue, the commissioners approved the installation of new water lines by the end of December—a critical win that kept the project moving forward.
Despite winter setbacks due to illness and weather, the coalition remained persistent. By April 2025, they had secured a 50/50 cost-sharing agreement with the city to install a sidewalk connecting Lincoln and Main it is an important link for children walking to school and for families pursuing more active lifestyles.
This work demonstrates that with community commitment, strategic partnerships, and support from programs like CDRR, even rural areas can lead powerful change. Stanton County is building more than just sidewalk they're paving the way for healthier futures.
