Here we go! Only about six weeks to get our sh*t together, meaning selling most of our possessions for our upcoming adventure. We are excited and a bit overwhelmed but we know it’ll be worth it!
Life is so short and precious and we don’t want to look back with ‘what ifs’ and regrets. We feel that can create any narrative and feel like there will never be enough time or money to do the things we want to do in life and believe me, it is scary…THE UNKNOWN!
We have faith and better yet, we have each other! We are looking forward to connecting with people from all over, sharing what we have incorporated into our lives to be healthier and to learn from others. What are they doing? Really just to be curious and we plan to share that info and our reflections with all of you!
We will definitely miss Hawaii, this paradise has been our home for almost 48 years. We will most definitely miss our friends and family - the feeling of love and support is immeasurable! We have and continue to experience so much ALOHA. It is a feeling, and so many people we meet just embody it and we would love to share what that means to us as we journey. We have both spent our lives working in the customer service industry and are definitely people-people!
We made a little video on our new YouTube channel talking about our first destination. Please check it out and share with your friends & family! Link is below. We would love to have you follow our journey, share your insights, give travel advice, stay connected and BAKA DANCE together! Maybe even come meet us wherever we are?!
Love,

-Reviewing physical activity guidelines and whether step counts is beneficial

Oftentimes when we hear someone talk about calorie burn our first thought is exercise. But interestingly enough, there are actually 4 different pathways that our body burns calories and exercise is only a small part of that!

1️⃣ 🚶🏻‍♀️ NEAT or "non-exercise activity thermogenesis" accounts for 20% of your total daily calorie burn. This is something not often discussed but it's extremely important! How much are you moving around? Things that fall into this category are standing, casual walking, cleaning, cooking and even fidgeting! The more general movement you have in your day the better!

2️⃣ 🏃🏻 Exercise accounts for about 10% of daily calorie burn. How many calories you burn/how much this affects your daily total is individualized and can depend on what you do for your workout. Generally speaking, higher intensity cardio activities will burn the most amount of calories. This doesn't mean you should cut out strength training however - read below on how your basal metabolic rate is affected by lifting weights.

3️⃣. 🍽 Did you know that eating helps you to burn calories? In fact, up to 10% of daily calorie burn comes from the process your body goes through to chew and breakdown your food for digestion and also the energy it takes to store important nutrients in the body. Not all foods evoke the same thermic effect of food however. High protein foods have the greatest effect on stimulating TEF.

4️⃣ 🔥 Last but certainly not least, the largest contributor to your daily calorie burn comes from your Basal Metabolic Rate at 60%. Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of calories that are burned when you are at rest. If you did nothing all day long, your body would still burn this amount of calories in order to keep your heart pumping blood, your lungs filling with oxygen and your brain functioning. What's the greatest way that you can increase your basal metabolic rate? Through improving your lean body mass. This is why regular strength training can really help you in the long term if you are looking for ways to burn more calories.

If you are a smart watch/phone user, I’m sure you’ve heard it somewhere before that you should be aiming to get 10,000 steps each day for optimal health. But where does this idea of 10k come from? What’s so magical about that number? Let’s talk about where that originated from.

In 1964 after the Tokyo Olympics, a Japanese company (Yamasa Corporation) created a new step-tracker. At the time surrounding the Olympics there was an increased focus on physical fitness in Japanese culture. The pedometer was named Manpo-Kei which is translated as “10,000 step meter”. This soon became the benchmark and was used in their marketing campaign to promote increased physical activity.

So if there is no scientific data promoting 10,000 steps/day, what should you aim for? Recent studies show that it appears most individuals see near maximal benefits at around 6,000-8,000 steps/day. So, 10,000 is great if you are already easily achieving that, but if you are not, starting with a lower number can still be beneficial. Even increasing your daily step count by just 1,000 can impart additional health benefits, especially for sedentary individuals.

It’s easy to get fixated on one particular number and think that if you are not getting 10,000 steps/day that you aren’t seeing any health benefits, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth.

For most, 30min of moderate pace walking is equivalent to 2,500-3,000 steps. If you’re looking for an easy way to increase your activity levels, consider carving out some time for a nice 30min walk outdoors.

Gazing Meditation or Trataka. It is the practice which involves focusing the eyes through intention but relaxed gazing. It means the meditators open their eyes to an external object. Then, they close their eyes but still gaze the image of this object in their mind.

Benefits of candle meditation include:

❤️ increased cognitive performance and focus
❤️ improved memory and spatial attention
❤️ improved mental health
❤️ improved sleep quality
❤️ improved eye health

You can either practice gazing into this diva or gaze at an object of your choosing.

Have you ever tried gazing meditation? Try this practice and share what you think!?

It has been over 2 years since the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic, and we are learning that this disease is here stay for the foreseeable future.

Since the outbreak first started in 2020, scientists and researchers across the globe have been feverishly gathering data on what factors put you at high risk for hospitalizations, ICU stays and death. This includes sports medicine professionals, exercise physiologists and researchers.

We know regular physical activity improves immune function and reduces the risk of systemic inflammation, which is a main contributor to lung damage caused by Covid. Additionally, exercise improves cardiovascular health, increases lung capacity, muscle strength and improves mental health. All areas that Covid is known to wreak havoc on.

Sports medicine researchers had hypothesized early in the pandemic that individuals who regularly meet the PA guidelines had better outcomes when it came to the disease.

Check out the blog post section of our website to learn more about what the scientific studies have shown on covid outcomes for both active and inactive individuals.

This post is not to bash Health Care Providers and Doctors. Most are extremely brilliant and truly care about the health and wellness of their patient population. I also personally know a few who preach exercise to almost all their patients.

But why are so many hesitant to talk about physical activity and exercise even though it has been proven to have substantial benefits for most chronic conditions and diseases?

Well it may be because exercise is an area that they just don't know that much about. A study done at the Univ of Florida Dept of Medicine in 2020 showed that less than half of their providers knew the recommendations for physical activity and health and only 52% reported meeting those standards themselves.

Which brings up another point, if providers exercise themselves, they are far more likely to prescribe exercise to their patients. Makes sense! Once you are seeing the benefits physical activity has on your own health it's easier to recommend it to others.

It's also important to note that they are also often tasked with providing a large amount of education and counseling within just a 15-20min window. They are there to help guide you for the majority of your health journey, but when it comes to exercise it's important to seek out the professionals in that field! Make sure when you're seeking out exercise advice, you look to someone whose background reflects an adequate amount of education and accredited certification to be giving you that advice and counseling. Hopefully in the future we can get more health care providers moving as well!

Are you feeling uninspired and lacking motivation but want to improve your health?

First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not. -Octavia
Butler

According to author of The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg states that a habit is a behavior that starts as a choice, and then become a nearly unconscious pattern. ... The behavior has become a habit. Every habit - no matter how simple or complex – has the same structure, which we call the "habit loop." There is a cue, a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode.

These programs aren't for everyone...

What does that mean?
Check in with yourself, see where you are on the readiness scale.
How do you know if you're ready? Ask yourself these questions:

1. Have I started making some positive changes already? (i.e. added some scheduled movement, more conscious about food choices, etc.)
2. Have my priorities changed and I want to spend more time focused on improving my health?
3. I really want the results but just not sure how to start but willing to commit to change with guidance and support.
4. I know I have to make some changes but I’m totally overwhelmed and just need someone to tell me what to do to start!

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, Lily and I have developed some new programs for you!

We are offering a variety of programs to support long-term wellness, we know that making changes can be tough but it's worth it in the long run for better energy and a happier outlook on life.
