I am en route back to NZ after having just had a wonderful time away with some of my bestest friends. These guys looked after me (fed me, housed me, listened to me), pushed me (running hard, climbing high), challenged me (bum sliding down a massive snow hill - sounds fun AND was scary!), taught me (descending downhill, that everything passes, you just got to keep putting one foot in front of the other). They also laughed with me (and at me, there was a lot of that too 😆). A lot of my learning was specific to the adventures we were doing; but is actually able to be generalised to life: you grow when you challenge yourself; hard times do pass; you just have to keep pushing on. I am so grateful for them and for this time we have had together. 🙏🏼🥰👊🏼🏃🏼‍♀️‍➡️

One of my sons said to me this morning - “I really like that shirt on you. I think it’s a good representation of what you do. The stripes are very professional, like a doctor. And the strawberries will make people feel better, and happy”. Too cute not to share 🍓

We did it! We ran 60k each on Saturday and raised $1400 for Movember. What a day. What a cause. Thank you to all who donated; those who supported us; those that asked a mate how he’s doing. Keep asking, and also ask for help. I’m here to help support in any way I can.

Globally, on average, 1 man dies by su***de every minute of every day. Helping men to establish better social connections can improve overall well being & reduce su***de risk. It’s Movember; and my mates & I are going to run a silly long run in a day (perhaps wearing mos) and will fundraise for Movember, which funds community based early intervention programs that address men’s mental health.

Yup, I’m a chick who might not understand the experience of men’s mental health. But I’m also a psychologist who works with men, I have 3 sons, a father, a brother and amazing male friends, and I care.

The runs with the running crew is great for our physical health, but also our mental health too. We shoot the s**t, talk about everything and nothing, laugh, feel the pain, have some fun.

Whatever you can donate - $1 a km; the price of a coffee; it all matters. Thank you in advance & I’ll keep you updated with silly photos. Link in bio ❤️

A wise man once told me this when I was running up a mountain and complaining about how hard it was. This quote originates from “A comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there” (Gina Milicia).

It resonates in both physical exercise and mental work. If we stay where we are comfortable, we miss the opportunity to grow and learn. If we are anxious about something, by not addressing this anxiety we actually reinforce it in the long term by missing the opportunity to see if it turns out differently to what we expect. (If it doesn’t, then we allow ourselves the chance to see that we do cope with it anyway!).

Therapy is also a place that can be outside of the comfort zone - yay to those in therapy!

Credit to Carter for always voicing this at the precise moments. I think it’s now yelled out on every run actually. 😆

The super person pose. A technique used in psychology. The idea behind this pose is that if we stand in a dominant position it may positively impact our confidence level.

My supervisor in my clinical training taught me this and she and I would do it together before my exams. I felt like an idiot to start off with but then it became a habit.

Something happened though and at some point I started putting my arm up. I imagine I really took on board superwoman and was just really getting into it. I was discussing it with a colleague who pointed out that your arm isn’t meant to go up, and that I actually look like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, rather than a super person.

So to all my clients who now practice being John Travolta - I’m sorry and also keep doing it because who wouldn’t be confident if they can dance like that 😂😬🕺

It’s school holidays. Love it; find it VERY difficult at the same time. Trying to get out of the house for a hike. One kid stays in house refusing for a long time. Get kids there. One kid - “When are we done?” Every. Minute. Me - “enjoy the journey”. At the end the kid says - “that was so amazing”. Me - “awesome! Shall we do another one these holidays?”. Him - “No”. I have no learnings from this. But a good (ish?!) photo. 😆

Disclosure of personal information alert. My youngest son was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. He’s 6 years old, had multiple interventions and 7 surgeries so far. We had our annual hospital team appointment today which was quite overwhelming, with a short impromptu investigation, and a list of procedures/surgeries we didn’t know would be a likelihood at this point.

This young chap dealt with it so well. He was nervous. He’s now at the age he remembers how difficult surgeries are. AND. As he’s having tubes put in his nose, he’s scrunching up his eyes and giving me the thumbs up at the same time.

After it, he says “that was a bit yuck. I don’t want to do the next surgery. I know I have to though. One walk at a time yeah Mum?”

Yes my littlest one. One step at a time. 👍🏽

Happy New Year to you all. Back in the clinic seeing people face to face, and back online. Have some space coming up in Feb to see new clients - been full for a light while so it’s great to be able to say this!

Went hiking with a good friend this weekend. Was so present. This was due to the stunning scenery, waterfalls, good company & multiple icy river crossings that rendered my feet with no feeling so I had to be careful I didn’t fall on my face 😆

It was so cold in Chch today. So I packed multiple layers, lots of food, and headed into the hills. Listened to 50s ballads which are quite lovely to run to, clambered down hills to avoid scary cows, and had a wee solo adventure! Feeling “pleasantly weary” 😊!
