~Meditation - The Next Step~
Sometimes the hardest part of a journey is not the first step. Rather, it’s the steps after reaching a milestone or other accomplishment. Fear and doubt tells us that not everything will be successful. One misstep could bring us back to square one, erasing all of our hard work and sacrifices. Rationally this is somewhat true - there is a risk to everything. It would be naive to think that we’ll get our way all the time. However, failure doesn’t mean all progress will be lost. If taking risks was always an “all or nothing” game, then why do anything at all?
Progress is not linear, success is whatever we want it to be, and failure is subjective. All of these things are a state of mind, not a state of being. Each individual gets to measure their success however they want. We set our own milestones and thresholds for not meeting our own expectations. So when we hesitate moving forward in fear of losing progress, there’s nothing really holding us back other than our own minds. And the great thing about the mind is that it can be changed. It might take a bit of work, but if moving forward is important, then that work is worth it.
To start, it may be beneficial to get some perspective of where we are and how we got there. Once we have achieved something, we will always know what the path was like and how it feels standing on top of that mountain. No one can take that experience from us, no matter what happens from that point.
As we stand on the threshold of this accomplishment, we can more easily see our next milestone and some of the things we need to do to get there. It may not be crystal clear what these next steps might be, but we can get a general idea of what’s expected of us based on the journey so far. We can make flexible plans for any difficulties we might come across, come up with different pathways we can take in case one path is blocked, and create multiple goals if we cannot reach one.
After getting these perspectives and making these plans, we can more confidently move forward and not be so afraid of failure. Preparation is the antidote to stagnation, and it’s the key to long-term goals and achievement.
