GRADING ⬆️⬇️ Do you know how to take a game and make it more or less challenging to meet the needs of your child? Consult with your OT for ideas! 💡
Rattlesnake Jake was just a little too easy for some kiddos who kept asking to play. I added a die 🎲 and tweezer tongs to up the challenge! 💪🏻

SPOOKY SNACK 🦷 🍎

Happy Halloween week! I don’t know about you, but as a pediatric therapist I’ve been celebrating Halloween all month with activities! 💀🎃

Check out this spooky snack idea! Perfect for Halloween to address fine motor skills by adding ingredients and using a knife to spread peanut butter, and helping kids with feeding issues and tactile defensiveness have fun with food 🥸

p.s. play with your food 🍎🥕🍓

WRITING GRASP ✍🏻
This band is helping to facilitate an emerging tripod grasp!
Other helpful items include broken crayons, short pencils, holding a pom pom or other item in hand using pinky, ring, and middle finger, and writing on a vertical surface like an easel or the wall! ✏️
Did you know your child should stop using a palmar or fi**ed grasp around 1.5 years old? Modified tripod grasp develops at 3.5-4 years old! 🥸👌🏻

WHEN I’M MAD 😡
It’s hard to impossible to communicate appropriately when kiddos (and adults!) are really angry. This chart is practiced BEFORE meltdowns and anger set in because you can’t teach in that anger moment.
This could be personalized to any child with the resources you have!!

SENSORY BIN IDEAS 🦕🦄🪐🦋

Sensory bins are such a fun way to target so many skills like fine motor, visual perceptual, sensory integration, utensil manipulation 🥄

All items added to bins were from the dollar store and Target 🎯

The “base” of the sensory bin could be rice, beans, rice & beans, dried noodles, rubber tire pieces, cut up sponges, water beads, sand, moon sand, pebbles, sea shells, lentils, flour, oats, popcorn kernels, dirt, marbles, ice, beads, shaving cream, packing peanuts, YOU NAME IT

Tips:
✔️Take if slow, don’t force your child to touch it. First try a tool like shovel or spoon to play!
✔️Use fun and preferred toys to encourage engagement!
✔️Provide tools for increased functionality like a spoon, tongs, shovel, puzzle pieces, etc.
✔️Put it on the ground to encourage your child to put their feet, or whole body in the bin for the ultimate sensory experience!

PUFFY PAINT 🎨 Today’s most fun sensory activity was working with a tactile defensive child using orange scented shaving cream mixed with finger paint 🖌 We started with a-tips as he was nervous about touching it, then he said “ok I’m going to use my fingers now” all on his own!! 🥰
Tell me your favorite sensory activities- 🙌🏻
