Lion’s Mane and Depression 🍄 Research on the antidepressant effects of lion’s mane shows that this mushroom significantly improves depressive disorders and could be used as an alternative to traditional antidepressants.
A clearer mind is a happier mind right? Studies suggest that hericenones and erinacines, compounds found in the lion’s mane mushroom, have the ability to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) proteins. Through the production of NGF and BDNF proteins, lion’s mane seems to aid in neurogenesis and proper development of nerve cells. This means higher levels of focus, memory retention, and mental energy.
Neurogenesis, particularly of the hippocampus, seems to be one of the underlying mechanisms of lion’s mane’s ability to relieve symptoms of various mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression.
The hippocampus is highly sensitive to stress and may play a central role in depressive disorders, according to a study published in the Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroscience. An increase in nerve cells in this area could be related to less severe symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as fewer instances of this mental illness.

Art by Ramariopsis kunzei 🍄 An edible mushroom known as coral fungi due to their resemblance to aquatic coral with significant antioxidant and antibacterial activities.
Pictures were taken both day and night in redwoods of California. At night, you can angle light behind the bottom of the mushroom and spray a mist to capture this stargazing effect.
Although edible, this mushroom does not grow in abundance in nature. It’s best left so that others can enjoy the view.

Fighting Fatigue and Depression 🍄🥰 Clinical studies have shown Reishi mushrooms to have the ability to reduce fatigue, depression, and anxiety, improving the quality of life of these subjects.
One study examined its effects in 132 people with neurasthenia, a poorly defined condition associated with aches, pains, dizziness, headaches and irritability. The researchers concluded that fatigue was reduced and well-being was improved, most noticeably after 8 weeks of consuming Reishi hot water extract.
Another study found that fatigue was reduced and quality of life was improved after 4 weeks of taking reishi extract powder in a group of 48 breast cancer survivors. The people in the study also experienced less anxiety and depression as a result of their improvement.
Both studies are found in the National Library of Medicine (PMID:15857210 and PMID: 22203880) and more studies continue to be released that show the same conclusions, proving the power of the Queen of mushrooms.

Armillaria ostoyae 🍄 Next time you purchase white button mushrooms at the grocery store, just remember, they may be cute and bite-size but they have a relative out west that occupies some 2,384 acres (965 hectares) of soil in Oregon's Blue Mountains. Put another way, this humongous fungus would encompass 1,665 football fields, or nearly four square miles (10 square kilometers) of turf.
The discovery of this giant Armillaria ostoyae in 1998 heralded a new record holder for the title of the world's largest known organism, believed by most to be the 110-foot- (33.5-meter-) long, 200-ton blue whale 🐋 Based on its current growth rate, the fungus is estimated to be 2,400 years old but could be as ancient as 8,650 years, which would earn it a place among the oldest living organisms as well.
The Armillaria grows by feeding off of tree roots, leaching off of them and actually killing them, causing them to decay. So, in a forest, it has a good shot of  growing to a massive size (at the cost of a few thousand acres of trees).
The fungus has a huge network of mycelial growth, that permeate below the ground of the forest. What shows up above ground are the mushrooms that get produced about once a year.

Auricularia auricula 🍄 or the wood ear often resembles a human ear growing out of a tree and has a very rubbery texture, like gummy candy. And yet this rubbery ear can be eaten and has been cultivated for food in China for centuries.
In common with other jelly fungi, A. auricula fruiting bodies contain high levels of polysaccharides… but its main therapeutic application is cardiovascular support (Average Dose: 2-3g/day A. Auricularia extract). The polysaccharides and polyphenols have been shown to lower blood total cholesterol, inhibit the growth of blood clots, sooth irritated or inflamed mucous membranes, and contain antioxidant properties showing strong cardio-protective action.
Furthermore, a 2015 study published in the “International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms” found that the wood ear mushroom was effective at blocking the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, two common types of bacteria that can cause infections in humans.
Wood ear has a long history as a medicinal, and some of its uses are being confirmed, or at least supported by modern research.

Phellinus linteus 🍄 Uniquely among the medicinal mushrooms, P. linteus has the highest anti-tumour activity of the Hymenomycetes (a fungal grouping containing the major medicinal mushrooms).
It’s also found to have the greatest macrophage activation. Research shows broad immunostimulant activity, anti-cancer properties, and the ability to enhance the efficacy of existing chemotherapeutic drugs.
Today, it’s major therapeutic application is cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, infertility, and allergies. Using polysaccharide extracts of P. linteus at an average 2-3g/day.

Agaricus bisporus 🍄🇺🇸 White mushrooms constitute 90% of the mushrooms consumed in the United States. When fully grown, they’re known as portobello mushrooms.
Studies have shown the Agaricus species to be used for cancer, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, “hardening of the arteries” (arteriosclerosis), ongoing liver disease, bloodstream disorders, and digestive problems.
Other uses include prevention of heart disease, weakened bones (osteoporosis), and stomach ulcers.
White button mushrooms are the most commercially cultivated mushroom in the world, which make them the most easily accessible. The question is, is consuming only one type of mushroom enough?
If you’ve read this far, take note! Consider including a variety of different species of mushrooms in your diet, the same way you include a variety of different vegetables and fruits in your diet: shiitake, lion’s mane, maitake, enokitake, and oyster mushrooms are some of many delicious mushrooms you can include in any culinary dish.
If cooking isn’t your thing, consider trying our high concentration extracts that you can include in your teas, coffees, or any drink of choice. 🍄💙🍵☕️

Every mushroom expert repeats the same mantra: “Never eat a mushroom unless you can positively identify it.”
Mushrooms with white gills are often poisonous. So are those with a ring around the stem and those with a volva. Because the volva is often underground, it's important to dig around the base of a mushroom to look for it. Mushrooms with a red color on the cap or stem are also either poisonous or strongly hallucinogenic.
The mushroom in this post is Amanita virosa, or “Destroying Angel.” Symptoms of poisoning often don’t appear until 6-24 hours after eating, and include vomiting, diarrhea, and cramps. Compounds of Amanita virosa have even shown to destroy your DNA. Later, kidney or liver dysfunction occurs and often leads to death.
