One day in TODDLER MEALS using ROUTINE, SCHEDULE + PLANNED MEALS 🤍

Today, I’m sharing an example of a daily meal routine/plan for a toddler (this was for my daughter at age 3). I planned her meals, using Ashley 💚 Dietitian Mom] ‘s “Love it, Like it, Leaning it” approach. This strategy makes meals planning way easier!!
——-
8:00am Breakfast
• Love it: strawberries, pineapples, toast with butter
• Like it: scrambled eggs
• Learning it: green pepper
——-
11:00am Lunch
• Love it: grilled cheese
• Like it: watermelon
• Learning it: cucumber + tomatoes
*Here, I served the tomatoes on the side (sometimes off the plate) because they are a big challenge. This is 👌🏻. They don’t have to be on your child’s plate. As long as you plan them as part of the meal, you are making a difference.
——-
2:00pm Snack
• Love it: veggie straws + blueberries
• Like it: hummus
• Learning it: cucumber
*I served the cucumber again, but in a different shape. Avoid serving the exact same food two days in a row. If you do, especially if a loved food, this can lead to food jags (see previous post for info on that).
——-
5:00pm Dinner
• Love it: roll with butter
• Like it: ground grass-fed beef + ranch
• Learning it: lasagna + lettuce
*Lasagna was our family dinner. To make it work for everyone, I added safe foods (meat, bread, butter, ranch) to the meal.
——-
All meals served on our adorable sectioned plates:
• Mini Play Mat in cream
• Limited Edition Peppa Pig Mat
• Mini Mat in lime
• Happy Mat in blue

Stop Moving Goalposts

If a baby has a tongue tie or lip tie and it's affecting how they are feeding, it's important that you approach the baby for the ACTIVE symptoms. It is not appropriate to say:
1) "Well, let's see if it affects his speech later on"
2) "She will fall and break the lip tie when she's older so no need to treat it now"
3) "If they have problems licking an ice cream cone or eating food, then we can address it"

This is an intentional attempt to deflect the attention away from the active feeding problems. If a child has webbed fingers and can't participate in piano lessons, would it be appropriate to say "Let's see if it prevents him from holding a pencil later on"? Of course not.

Stop moving goalposts. Focus on what's happening right now. For the parents out there who are told this, hold your ground. Demand a solution for what's affecting your baby right now. Don't allow a lactation consultant or ENT or pediatrician or grandparent to tell you to wait to see if it affects something else later when a tie is affecting things right now.

Baby popsicles

Did you know, you can make a simple baby popsicle with breast milk, formula, or puree? These are great options, especially if your little one isn’t accepting solids when you first start. I love baby popsicles for many reasons, including:

👍🏻Perfect for independent, self-feeding
👍🏻 A new way for baby to explore a preferred taste
👍🏻Offers baby small tastes to ease into eating solids
👍🏻Cold temperature can be alerting for baby’s mouth and increased sensation can lead to increased movement (I love these for little ones with low-muscle tone or weaker mouth muscles)
👍🏻Great for a warm, sunny day
👍🏻Perfect way for baby to join the other kids in eating dessert

Have you started solids and baby isn’t doing well? Check out my highlight “refusing solids” where I team up with Alex | Picky Eating Dietitian] to share tips on how to help, including this one!
