Full Ecology

Full Ecology Times are wild and worrying. Full Ecology has a plan. Every solution follows from that. It’s not just a wonderland, not just a metaphor. Nature shows us how.

Join author, Gary Ferguson and social psychologist, Mary M Clare to anchor deep in the nature that is your source - your home. The maps Nature has for guiding us through any human quandary are right in front of us, and they’re free.

• You are Nature – all Natural systems are connected. We're all nature, that means you, too. From airplanes to architecture, medicines to wind turbines, the models for our best inventions are found in nature.
• Diversity/interdependence – we can’t live without it. Nothing can.
• Energy efficiency – Natural systems thrive by not wasting effort – so do we.
• Give & take – In addition to releasing the oxygen we breathe, trees also give off chemicals that make humans healthier. The trees, in turn, take in the carbon dioxide we exhale to help them grow.
• Creativity – to survive is to improvise. So with all that wisdom at my fingertips, how do I actually use it?
• Listen inside to listen outside. First, realize where you are: Ever and always in relationship with the Natural World.
• Pay attention.
• Be open to surprise/persuasion.
• Leave no trace. Listening requires no degradation of you or the world you live in. It’s just listening.
• Choose. Living Full Ecology is yours to choose. https://fullecology.com/

This month we're moving into our 6th year of the How it Looks from Here podcast. In keeping with tradition, Gary & Mary open the season with an episode to catch up on Full Ecology and their work in the world. Listen as they interview one another, taking stock of where the podcast has been, where it is, and where it's going. During their chat, Mary asks Gary about his newest book, The Twilight Forest, and he shares tales of venturing among the Ponderosa of the arid Southwest to document the majesty and vulnerability of these iconic evergreens. Gary then invites Mary to speak of her recent work inviting us to consider our Inner Elders. Unique to each of us, this inner companion and guide has too often gone unseen. In these days of uncertainty, that calm presence within - the part of our personalities that knows us completely - is certainly worth getting to know. Link in profile -

And so the season begins to turn. We've done this every year of our lives, and the Earth is simply a pro - the quintessential pro, really. On we will go, at our best in community - with each other and the wide, wise and wild world of being that surrounds and holds us..

Astronomers are able to identify the hour and minute of any given phase of the moon. Yesterday, where we live, the moon was full three minutes after noon. So we didn't see the eclipse the way people did in Borneo or Alsace-Lorraine, in Taipei or the whole of Croatia. Their eyes could see this moon and eclipse - going dark, coming back to the light again. This was the view that we got - last night, after the moon was at its fullest. No less magical, really. And worth prizing, like every moment in this wild and precious life.

On the cusp of a full moon. A moon that will be in eclipse for much of the word. Hidden for over an hour by shadow. So time and its circumstances move and move.

Ever the clothes horse. Portland passed the law nearly 4 decades ago to make it any time new buildings are erected, one percent of the investment was required to be reflected in public art. I'm not sure if this little dude down by the Willamette river is a part of that thoughtful civic expression, but he's a joy to watch over the seasons. Soon we may even know his name. Stay tuned.
