Beautifully and clearly explained by Brenda Carey Stuttering Treatment Centre!
Stuttering: just how common is it?
-In a crowd of 100 adults, on average 1 person will stutter.
-If the crowd contains only children, that number is likely to be higher.
-Close to 1 in 10 children will stutter if the crowd consists only of preschool children.
-If the crowd contains only men, more will stutter than if the crowd is all-female.
-Severely hearing-impaired people will be much less likely to stutter, while those who have Down syndrome will be much more likely to stutter.
-If a person has a close relative who stutters, they will be more likely to stutter.
-People who stutter will be equally represented irrespective of their race, religion or country of origin.
-Adults who stutter will be much more likely to have speech related anxiety and even social phobia. Those are typically the result, not cause of stuttering.
-Most people who stutter will have experienced negative reactions to their stuttering, though the frequency and severity will vary greatly.
-Being a person who stutters will impact every person differently.
