The AMR Narrative Promoting patient & public advocacy, community, awareness & education to mobilise action against AMR CIO Registered Charity Number: 1204055

The AMR Narrative is a charity that was set up to promote and develop advocacy capacity among the public to improve participation and mobilise action against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). As patients and consumers, pet owners, parents, or carers we play a pivotal role in advocating for the appropriate use of antimicrobial medicines. By protecting antimicrobial medicines in humans, animals, the e

nvironment, and food sectors we are ensuring a more sustainable future for everyone especially those who are most vulnerable to untreatable infections.

Sharing our stories about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is not just powerful, it is necessary.

Behind every statistic is a person. A family. A life changed by an infection that didn’t respond to antimicrobial medicines like antibiotics.

When we speak openly about our experiences, we put a human face to AMR. We move it from being a distant, scientific issue to a lived reality that policymakers, healthcare professionals and the public can truly understand.

Stories build awareness.
Stories influence change.
Stories remind the world that AMR is about people.

At The AMR Narrative, our patient partners share their journeys with courage and honesty because they know that voices drive action. By telling what happened to them, they help prevent it happening to someone else.

See why so many of our patient partners choose to share their stories by reading their words below.

Every voice matters. Every story counts, including yours.

Whether you are a patient, carer, survivor, family member or concerned citizen, we invite you to share your story by emailing MyStory@theAMRnarrative.org or scanning the QR code below to complete our form.

A powerful reminder of why antimicrobial resistance (AMR) matters beyond statistics.

Read Jibraan’s moving story, kindly contributed by his father, Nveed Chaudhary from The JCSR Foundation. Jibraan was a young man whose cancer journey was tragically complicated by sepsis and antimicrobial resistance. His story powerfully illustrates how antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can turn what might otherwise be a treatable infection into a life-threatening situation for cancer patients.

Read Jibraan's story here 👉 https://amrnarrative.org/a-familys-love-loss-and-the-reality-of-cancer-sepsis-and-amr/

This story has kindly been contributed by Dr. Nveed Chaudhary, and adapted from the JCSR Foundation (The Jibraan Chaudhary Sepsis Research Foundation), which is a UK-registered charity that works to fund innovative and cutting-edge medical research to manage and treat chemotherapy-associated sepsis....

🎙️ New episode of AMR EmpowerCast!!

The AMR EmpowerCast is a YouTube podcast hosted by patient advocate Vanessa Carter, who has lived experience of a life-threatening resistant infection.

In this mini-series, we focus on the Value of Diagnostics in Healthcare. Vanessa speaks with Dr Neda Milevska Kostova from the AMR Patient Alliance and Patients for Patient Safety Observatory about the vital role of diagnostics and practical actions for both patients and healthcare professionals.

January is almost over, but in many countries, the cold weather continues to challenge children’s health. Winter in paediatrics tests our antibiotic habits: coughs, colds, and uncertainty can make prescribing feel like the safest choice, but unnecessary antibiotics drive resistance and worsen health inequalities.

With thanks to Dr Erva Nur Cinar for generously contributing this blog which focuses on five practical paediatric resolutions for the year ahead to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Featured image created by GeminiIn paediatrics, New Year’s reality is often a winter waiting room - a toddler with a runny nose and a high temperature or a school aged child coughing through the night. Parents are exhausted. Clinicians are stretched. But everyone wants the same thing; for that chi...

As 2025 comes to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you as well as our partners, sponsors, donors, external advisors, content contributors, volunteers, trustees and team for their invaluable support throughout the year.

Antimicrobial medicines, such as antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics and antivirals, are a precious gift. In 2026, let us unite all our voices to ensure we continue to protect them.

Some might call it the last day of World AMR Awareness Week, but we believe that the 24th of November should reinvigorate our efforts going forward throughout the year, reminding us that patients are central to everything we do, and that Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) should be tackled through everyday interactions and partnerships between patients and doctors.

Read Gavin's powerful story of ongoing survival. As a renal patient, having suffered multiple infections, he works closely with his medical teams to reduce risks, asking questions like “Which antibiotics still work?” or “Can we target treatment more precisely?” to help protect himself and preserve these life-saving medicines for others.

It’s World AMR Awareness Week, and part of our charity's efforts are focused on debunking common misconceptions. Let’s start with a basic one: why antibiotics don’t work for viral infections such as colds and flu.

As Dr Francesco M. Labricciosa explains in his blog, taking an antibiotic for a viral infection is “like eating soup with a fork”. Antibiotics aren’t designed to treat viruses; they are made to target bacterial infections. When we use them incorrectly, we put ourselves and others at risk.

Did you know that it is World AMR Awareness Week?

Every 18th-24th November, the global health community unites for World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW), an annual campaign led by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and promote the responsible use of antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics.

Read more about World AMR Awareness Week here as well as about some of our tools and resources including a social media advocacy toolkit, explainer video and AMR Heroes song to help you get involved.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) could claim 10 million lives every year by 2050.

Despite major milestones, one crucial element remains overlooked: the central role of prevention.

The best outcome? Stop infections before they occur.
Prevention reduces illness, saves costs, slows resistance and ultimately saves lives.

Every infection prevented is one less opportunity for resistance to spread.
Let’s make prevention the foundation of AMR strategy, not a side note.

Read our latest blog highlighting the role of prevention in tackling AMR:

Most readers are (hopefully) well aware of the serious threat posed by antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which could claim up to 10 million lives globally each year by 2050. In response, policymakers at the global, European, and national levels have mobilised landmark initiatives — most recently the...

🌍 Yesterday was One Health Day!

But what does that mean for patients, carers, the public, policymakers, and healthcare stakeholders when it comes to tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR)?

In our latest blog, Professor Sabiha Essack explores the vital links between human, animal, food, and environmental health and explains why only a holistic One Health approach can help us fight this growing global threat.

After all, many of the same precious antimicrobial medicines we rely on as patients (e.g. antibiotics) are also used, and sometimes misused, in animals and other sectors. Understanding these connections is key to safeguarding them for everyone.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens to undermine a century of medical progress. Once-treatable infections are becoming harder—and sometimes impossible—to cure. The problem is not confined to hospitals or human medicine; it is woven through the food we eat, the water we drink, the animals we...
