As far as fireworks-related injuries around Independence Day go, the most common ones are burns to the hands and fingers, followed by injuries that involve the head, face, ears and eyes. Fireworks, including sparklers and flares, can cause serious burns as well as blast injuries that can permanently impair vision and hearing. Physicians at our nationally-verified Level I Trauma Center encourage celebrants to protect themselves and their children from firework injuries by following these tips:

Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
Adults should supervise all fireworks activities.
Handle and use fireworks in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and all warning labels.
Light fireworks on smooth, flat surfaces, and aim them away from buildings, dry leaves, flammable materials and spectators.
Do not try to relight fireworks that malfunction.
Do not modify fireworks or use homemade fireworks.
Light fireworks one at a time, then quickly move back.
Keep a phone and a bucket of water or fire extinguisher within reach, and know first aid for burns.

Theodis has little memory of what happened in the minutes prior to him arriving at The Medical Center after going into cardiac arrest, but the care he received in both our intensive care and cardiac units made a lasting impact!
Upon arrival at The Medical Center, his care team found that he had two heart blockages. Within the ICU environment and later at the Luce Heart Institute, the care he received was above and beyond! He underwent a procedure to place an ICD device to further help him as he continues to recover at home!
“I couldn’t ask for a better experience. I just felt like this was the best of the best, first-class care. When I went to the team that gave me the ICD, I was impressed even more,” Theodis says. “There was nice positive environment. It was so nice that I forget why I was even there, to start with. From the moment I got there, I felt like was in good hands”
