Hey everybody,
If you’re reading this, it is my greatest wish that you are safe and well..
On the afternoon of August 6th, I was crossing a residential street while doing a delivery for Uber Eats when I unexpectedly got hit head on by a woman driving a Toyota Highlander. The impact of the accident spliced the arteries underneath my knee. I have never seen so much blood before.
I was immediately taken to the ER where I underwent a six hour surgery followed by a six day stay at the hospital. Thankfully, my health insurance took care of the surgery and hospital bill so I didn’t end up racking up any major expenses from that. One of the craziest things that happened after the accident was when the police showed up after the accident and asked what happened, the lady that hit me said that “I found him like this.”
The impact of the collision completely destroyed my electric wheelchair. And unfortunately, insurance is refusing to pay for a new electric wheelchair.
Additionally, delivering for Uber Eats means that I am an independent contractor, therefore there is no option for me to collect any money from them to replace the wheelchair.
As somebody suffering from spina bifida, my electric wheelchair basically serves as my legs and is the reason why I am able to live independently. Because of that, I am trying to raise money to pay for a new wheelchair.
Briefly a little bit about myself. I graduated from Stanford in 2019 and used to work in the live event industry. Because of COVID, the whole industry cratered overnight and I ended up getting furloughed mid-March. I switched to doing Postmates/Uber Eats etc in order to pay my bills.
Up until the accident, things were manageable from a financial standpoint. The accident prevented me from performing the job that I have been working at for the last few months. I am asking for a little help from you all so that I can afford to get a new electric wheelchair to help me get back on my feet and go back to living independently again. The cost of the wheelchair is $6000 and I am asking for another $1000 to help with my rent for September, so the total I am trying to raise is $7000.
Lastly, I just want to say how grateful I am to be ok even after this accident. I truly feel like I have been given a second chance at life. I realize these are tough times for everyone so even if you can’t donate, I appreciate you taking the time to read my story.
Much love,
Sap
