More on the foot! Have you ever had plantar fasciitis? It presents as a very painful and tender area on the bottom of your heel when walking or standing and is worse when first getting up in the morning. This is caused by inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs vertically down the foot from the heel bone to the toes. Caused by a strain injury from running, walking and once again... improper footwear, if not treated can become chronic, plantar fasciosis where a heel spur grows over time causing dysfunction in the foot. Ways to treat it? Icing, stretching, massage therapy and the wonderful RockTape! Continuing on with my “From the Bottom Up” posts, here’s a good ol’ borrowed foot anatomy pic. Just a visual to share with you why the foot is so important - home of about a quarter of the bones in our entire body as well as a myriad of tiny muscles, tendons, fascia, nerves and vessels all tightly bound together on what is our foundation for proper movement. What does this have to do with massage? “A lot” is my answer! Freeing up adhesions in the foot caused by old ankle sprains, wear and tear and just, might as well say it, neglect and abuse from cute shoes will free up the rest of you for proper and healthy movement. A stroll on the beach while barefoot - a constant reminder about foot health. Our feet, each made up of 28 bones, 30 joints, around 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments and 15,000 nerves, are our foundation and the reason we stand and walk.
