Here are some easy tips for preparing a balanced meal:
Have a source of protein. This can be from animal or plant sources. Aim for 3-4 oz for animal sources and about 1 cup for plant sources.
Add in health fats. These can be added onto the meal as a finishing touch or used for cooking. Just make sure you don’t lose the benefits by oxidizing the oil or fats.
Get carbohydrates mainly from vegetables and fruits. Include these veggies in every meal, even in snacks. One more thing: keep your veggie sources varied so that you can maximize the different nutrient contents.

Don’t limit your choices to these combos. Try to make your own combinations based on your preferences, the availability of ingredients, and your budget.
Feel free to share your combinations!

Do you feel bloated after you eat? Do you feel like the food you eat doesn’t get digested properly? Proper digestion is important not only to gut health but also to overall health. When the food we eat is properly digested, it ensures we get the nutrients from what we eat. It also prevents our body from being exposed to partially digested or undigested food particles that can be perceived by our immune system as dangerous objects that it mounts an immune response against. If this is perpetuated, it leads to a dysfunctional immune response that can cause chronic diseases like autoimmunity and many others.

For better digestion, the first step is to get good quality foods with lots of nutrients like fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that aid in digestion. Next is to support the actual process of digestion by chewing our food properly, by supporting gut motility through movement, and by staying hydrated.

Our gut bacteria has the important role of maintaining proper gut function and supporting proper immune function. When it becomes out of balance, it can lead to problems with intestinal permeability and immune response. These problems are not isolated in the gut or the digestive system. It can lead to other chronic conditions like autoimmune disease, heart disease, obesity, hormonal problems, cancer, mood disorders, etc.

An out of balance gut bacteria can mean that there are not enough of the good ones, there are too many of the bad ones, or that they are somewhere where they should not be. Oftentimes, to address root causes of chronic conditions, we need to address gut bacterial imbalance.
