At mindhamok, supporting mental health is central to everything we do. We help students and staff navigate challenges, maintain balance and build resilience whilst living, working, and supporting others overseas.

On this , we wanted to share some of the simple practices our team uses to care for their own mental health every day…

💭 Leanne, Clinical Lead:
“I try to journal every day. It’s a great way to clear my head, get down the good and the bad and let go of it all so I don’t carry it into the next day.”

🧘‍♀️ Tiziana, Director and Co-Founder:
“I practise meditation daily for anywhere between 5 to 45 minutes depending on the time I manage to find. I also practise yoga once a week to take care of mind, body and soul.”

🌳 Keith, Executive Director and Co-Founder:
“I always try to have a list of things to look forward to as well as spend time in nature daily.”

🚶‍♀️ Lily, Operations and Comms Manager:
“I start every day with a walk. Even if it’s just for 10 minutes, my day needs to begin outside, come rain or shine.”

This year’s theme reminds us that mental health care should be equitable and accessible for all.

💚 Let’s take a moment today to reflect, care and act for our mental wellbeing.

Studying abroad teaches you way more than what’s covered in lectures. You learn through how you adapt, how you connect with new people, and how your perspective shifts in ways you didn’t expect. But let’s be real, there’s pressure too. Trying to keep up academically, make friends, and adjust to a whole new environment all at once can feel like a lot.

If it’s getting overwhelming, you’re not alone. It’s okay to need support, asking for help is part of the learning process too.

Education can change your life, and the right support can help you really grow through it.

Studies show that students who get mental health support during transitions, like moving abroad or returning home, tend to do better academically and feel more resilient. That doesn’t surprise us. When your mind feels steady, everything else like focus, motivation, and making new connections, gets a little easier.

But a lot of students still hesitate to ask for help. There’s this idea that you have to push through it on your own. The truth is, reaching out early isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s actually a smart way to take care of yourself.

When support is easy to access, students are more likely to use it. And that can make a real difference.

Culture shock doesn’t always hit all at once. Sometimes it shows up slowly, feeling tired for no clear reason, getting irritated easily, or wanting to pull away from everything. When nothing around you feels familiar, it can be hard to know where to find your footing.

Start with something small that gives you a sense of steadiness. Maybe it’s a walk, your favorite snack, or writing things out. Talking to others who are going through similar changes can make a big difference too.

If things start to feel heavy, don’t wait to reach out. You’re not meant to figure this all out on your own. Support is here when you need it.

Culture shock doesn’t look the same for everyone, and sharing your experience might help someone else feel a little more normal. What was your biggest “what is happening?” moment abroad?

It usually takes around six weeks to start feeling emotionally adjusted in a new country. Depending on how you’re feeling right now, that might sound like a long time, or no time at all.

The first few days are often filled with excitement and adrenaline, but once that fades, the reality of being somewhere new can settle in. That’s when support really matters. Having someone to talk to, or a service that understands what you’re going through, can make it all feel more manageable.

You might not always notice the emotional side of adjusting, but it affects everything, from your focus and energy to how you connect with people and settle into your day. You don’t have to figure it out on your own.

Coming home from abroad isn’t always as simple as it sounds. People expect it to feel comforting and familiar, but for many students, the return can be unexpectedly tough. You’ve changed in ways you might not fully realize, but everything back home looks just like you left it.

That gap can bring up a lot: feeling out of place, frustrated, or even guilty for not being happy to be back. And that’s completely normal. You’ve grown while you were away, and it takes time to figure out how that version of you fits into your old surroundings.

Support during this kind of transition makes a difference, even if it’s just having someone who gets it. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Travel brings out parts of you that everyday life never quite touches. It can push you to reflect, question things you’ve always believed, and look at your habits in a new light. Studying abroad isn’t just about exploring new places, it’s about figuring out who you are when everything familiar is far away.

That kind of growth can feel exciting, and also really intense. It’s why looking after your mental health matters so much while you're finding your footing.

This quote is a good reminder: sometimes travel isn’t about what you see, but what you begin to understand about yourself.

Being a student is hard. Being a student in a new country? Even harder. Here’s what you need to know about mental health while studying abroad:

Your GPA ≠ Your Worth – Grades don’t define you. Take care of yourself first, and success will follow.
Normalize saying "no." You don’t have to do it all—overcommitting leads straight to burnout. Protect your peace.
Feeling lonely in a new country hits differently. It’s okay to feel that way. Find a community that feels like home.
A social media detox = an instant mood boost. Stop comparing your life to highlight reels and start living in the moment.
Gratitude changes everything. Shift your focus to what you do have, and you’ll feel the difference. Try it daily.

Your mental health comes first, no matter where you are.
