🆕This week, the WHO AFRO Regional Consultations on Research Priority Setting for Traditional Medicine are taking place in Addis Ababa| 🇪🇹, bringing together experts, policymakers, and advocates from around the world to discuss the future of research in Africa.

The TCIH Coalition is glad to be part of these crucial consultations. Today, Elisa Baldini, member of the TCIH Coalition Council, presented our advocacy efforts for supporting the implementation of the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034 at the national level. This Strategy represents a key framework to support universal access to healthcare and to ensure that Africa’s rich traditional medicine benefits everyone.

👏Congratulations to the World Health Organization African Region for fostering these constructive discussions and creating new opportunities for collaboration.

🌿African Traditional Medicine Week reminds us, once again, of the crucial role plays in the lives of millions across this continent.
This year’s theme, “Strengthen the evidence base for traditional medicine,” highlights the importance of building knowledge, research, and integration to ensure equitable access to healthcare for all.
Our TCIH Coalition members and representatives are in Addis Ababa this week, working closely with partners to explore how the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034 can help strengthen primary healthcare systems across Africa.

🆕From managing chronic diseases to reducing unnecessary antibiotic use, the newly adopted WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy supports traditional and integrative approaches that work for people and the planet.

📢 At the in Geneva (19–27 May 2025), WHO Member States adopted the Traditional Medicine Strategy for the next decade, marking a milestone for inclusive, culturally respectful, and person-centered healthcare.

🗣 Dr. Tido von Schoen-Angerer, President of TCIH Coalition: Traditional and complementary medicine is increasingly finding its place alongside conventional care, not as an alternative, but as a partner in healing.

📌 In its official position, the TCIH Coalition expresses strong support for the Strategy, outlining four key priorities:
🔹 Widespread use of traditional and complementary medicine for prevention and chronic conditions
🔹 Clear pathways to assess safety and effectiveness
🔹 Protection of Indigenous knowledge and fair benefit-sharing
🔹 Greater public investment in underfunded TCIH research.

🎤“The communities who hold this knowledge must be appropriately recognized and included,” considers Dr Alana Gall, a TCIH Coalition board member.

👋“Collaboration across traditional, Indigenous, complementary, and biomedical health systems isn’t optional - it’s essential.”

That was the powerful message shared by Dr. Tido von Schoen-Angerer, President of the TCIH Coalition and co-author of the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034, during the side event “Improving UHC through the implementation of WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034” at the 78th World Health Assembly.
Hosted by China and other countries, the event brought together policymakers and global health leaders to explore how the new Strategy can support countries in broadening access to care and strengthening universal health coverage.

As Dr. von Schoen-Angerer highlighted in his intervention, real integration starts with mutual respect and shared learning. He exemplified Switzerland’s model, where various traditional medicine systems are officially recognized and fully integrated into the national health system, demonstrating that collaboration isn’t only feasible but also highly effective.
