A postpartum recovery basket is one of the kindest things you can prep for your future self. 🤍 Usually kept in the bathroom, a postpartum recovery basket is something you can prep while you’re still pregnant so that when you return from the hospital after giving birth, you can easily access the essentials whenever you need them.
Not sure where to start? Here’s a list of items that are usually included, and why:
🛁 Herbal sitz bath blends – a gentle, natural way to care for your body, offering soothing relief for swelling and soreness in your most tender areas.
🩲 Disposable underwear, pads, and panty liners – essential for postpartum bleeding. During the first few days postpartum, while lochia is heaviest, many women find disposable underwear the most effective (sometimes double lining with a pad). As bleeding decreases over the first few weeks, pads or panty liners will help keep you clean and comfortable. Pro tip: We LOVE using disposable underwear for periods, too. The organic cotton cover ones from are an awesome option.
🌿Perineal spray – provides relief and can help ease your discomfort, especially during trips to the bathroom while you recover.
✨ Peri bottle – can help gently clean the perineal area without agitating soreness or tears from birth. (They’re the perfect mini portable bidet!)
🌱 Witch hazel pads – anti-inflammatory & naturally cooling ingredient can help relieve itching, burning, and swelling in the perineum.
❄️ Ice packs – Cooling relief to reduce perineal swelling and discomfort. You can purchase postpartum ice packs that can be instantly “activated” and don’t need to be frozen in advance, or you can also create your own padsicles at home: simply apply aloe vera & witch hazel on pads, and pop them in the freezer.
