Tomorrow, October 7, marks the 22nd anniversary of my son Josh’s passing. For 22 years, October 7 has been a day of significance for my family and our loved ones as we honor Josh’s legacy and life. Last year, October 7 and the days, weeks, and months since have become laden with profound grief worldwide.

In honoring Josh and anyone who has lost a loved one at any moment in time, here is an excerpt from my book (and Josh’s), “Rising in the Mourning: Ways to Celebrate Life.” The excerpt contains quotes from “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” 2007. I selected this excerpt by turning randomly to a page and arrived at a timely and timeless message…

As Harry and Dumbledore stand up “looking for a long moment into each other’s faces,” Harry asks, “Tell me one last thing. Is this real? Or has this been happening inside my head?” A response comes quickly, “Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean it is not real?” For me here on earth, what I hear from Josh is real. Before words. Beyond words. Sensations, vibrations that transcend and expand what I experience through my five senses.
..While born of a death, the book is about the blessings in and of life, while perpetuating Josh’s enduring and illuminating messages (shared since his death).

May we each and all rise in our mourning, both individual and collective, so that we can celebrate life and each other. 💛

Daylight Saving Time arrives on March 13 in most parts of the US and at upcoming dates in other countries around the world by advancing the clock forward by one hour. So, what’s the impact on you and what can you do to adapt to the time shift? You may feel more tired, especially in the first few days after the time change because your body clock feels like it lost an hour of sleep.

Here are a few tips to adapt to the time change and to use the time shift as a catalyst to improve your sleep all year long.

-Be consistent with your schedule for bedtime, awakening, exercise, and meals during this transition as well as ongoing to support your body clock, your circadian rhythm.
-Expose yourself to natural light when you wake up. Your body's circadian clock responds to light as a signal to be awake and dark as a signal to fall asleep.
-At night, dim the lights in the house about an hour before sleep and turn off all digital screens to avoid exposure to blue light at the wrong time. Blue light is great in the morning and daytime.
-Start moving when you awaken, letting your body and brain know it is time to begin your day.
-Assess your sleep environment. It should be cool, dark, quiet, and peaceful to best support your sleep all year long.

Wishing you sweet dreams and vibrant days ahead!

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽? Today we’ve got five darkness focused tips from Nancy H. Rothstein, MBA, The Sleep Ambassador® and LinkedIn's resident sleep expert, to help you make the most of your sleep.

#𝟭 𝗗𝗶𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. This helps to set the stage for sound sleep by creating a relaxing and soothing atmosphere. Additionally, do a "light check" in your bedroom and bathroom to ensure that there are no lurking lights that can compromise your sleep.

#𝟮 𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗩 𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗱. These stimulate your brain, which makes it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Even worse, blue light exposure at the wrong time can disrupt the body's natural sleep cycle.

#𝟯 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. This prevents light exposure and brain stimulation. The minute your brain registers the time, it gets busy counting how much more sleep you have which can lead to anxiety and not falling back asleep.
#𝟰 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. In the daytime, light exposure helps regulate your body's natural sleep-wake cycle. For shift workers, it's essential to adapt accordingly to best serve your daytime sleep.

#𝟱 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 (say, if you have a roommate, kids or a bed partner who won’t give up playing video games in bed), here’s a smart solution...Try zDen to get the total darkness you need. And you won’t have to rearrange your room, unplug your alarm clock, or stop charging your phone!

By creating a pitch-black sleeping environment, you can help regulate your sleep-wake cycle including the release of melatonin and get much more quality out of your rest. So, the next time you're getting ready for bed, take a few extra minutes to ensure that every light in your room is turned off, including electronic devices, and experience the difference for yourself - or just open up your zDen and enjoy the best sleep you can get.

Sweet dreams! 🐑😴

Traveling during the holidays? As LinkedIn's sleep content expert, I created these tips for their amazing workforce and want to share with the LinkedIn community as well.

If you are traveling during the holidays, here are some tips to help you adapt to time changes, jet lag, and new surroundings so you can enjoy your trip with energy and enthusiasm!

-Prepare for your trip in advance not leaving packing and completing work demands the night before. You want to leave on your trip feeling energized, not exhausted.
-If you are not familiar with the sleeping environment at your destination, pack ear plugs, an eye mask, and even a white noise machine or have an app so you can mitigate any noise that may disturb your sleep.
-Do your best to stick to your sleep routine even if a time change has your body clock confused. If you are tired during the day, take a power nap (less then 30 minutes) to reboot your energy.
-Minimize alcohol consumption for 3 or more hours before bed. That said, if you are vacationing, do your best.
-Stay hydrated during the day, get plenty of daylight, and get exercise as best you can.
-As for flying, minimize alcohol and maximize water intake to stay hydrated. If your flight is overnight, bring ear plugs and an eye mask so you can get some slumber en route to your destination.
-When navigating airports and flying, you may choose to wear a mask to minimize exposure to viruses, such as Covid, the flu, or a cold. The same goes for crowded venues during the holidays, be it away from or near home.

Wishing you happy and healthy holidays filled with joy and some old-fashioned R&R!
