Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colourless and odourless gas that can prove to be lethal at high levels. While it’s generally non-irritating, CO is known for killing people who are unaware of its presence. CO is produced during incomplete combustion of organic matter, whether it’s from car engines, heaters, or cooking appliances that run on carbon-based fuels. Symptoms include headache, dizziness and even loss of consciousness, so it’s always important to be aware of your surroundings, especially during traffic congestion.

Decompression sickness (DCS), also known as “the bends”, is a condition that arises from dissolved gases coming out of solution into bubbles inside the body upon depressurization. DCS most commonly refers to problems associated with rapid ascent while underwater at significant depths. Symptoms can range from joint pain to paralysis to even death. Therefore, it is crucial to make sure that you rise slowly to the surface if you are ever swimming at deep sea levels.

Let’s talk about skincare. One of the keys to having a healthy body involves taking care of your skin. Some people have a daily routine; whereas, others don’t pay much attention to it. However, taking care of your skin is one of the easiest ways to boost your overall health. It doesn’t have to be complicated; you can start by washing your face a few times per day then work your way up to facials and exfoliation. In warm weather, it is important to apply sunscreen in order to avoid sunburn and skin cancer. In cold weather, applying a basic skin cream is helpful when it comes to avoiding rashes and itchy dry skin. Collagen is important for your skin, so by using exfoliation products (which remove dead skin cells), you can maintain healthy collagen levels in your skin! 😊

We all are aware of the importance of drinking enough water every day. Drinking water right after you wake up in an empty stomach is also important. Some of the benefits of drinking water when you wake up are:-
1) It circulates nutrients. Drinking water in the morning allows you to set up a solid nutrient distribution system.
2) It flushes wastes. Drinking water cleanses the colon. It enables you to have a free-flowing bowel movement. Free bowels may prevent constipation.
3) It improves immunity. After long hours without food or water, drinking water enhances the body’s defense system to fight against infections.
4) It lubricates joints. When we sleep for eight hours or more, our bodies get into a prolonged state of dehydration. This is why drinking water in the morning after waking is vital. It can help lubricate the joints.
5) It maintains blood pressure. Going hours without water can cause blood to thicken. When blood thickens, it increases your blood pressure. Drinking water in the morning provides enough circulation. It improves the blood flow with the needed nutrients.

While is it important to drink enough water, you should remember to not drink too much water.
Happy summer!

Fats are macronutrients that are essential for our bodies. However, it is important to understand which fats are good for us and which fats aren’t. Unsaturated fats consist of at least one double bond (it is healthier to consume fats with cis double bonds, rather than trans double bonds, as these are present in trans fats that are harmful for our body). The consumption of saturated fats has been linked to cardiovascular diseases; however, consuming unsaturated fats can lead to lower LDL cholesterol and reduced inflammation, both of which are beneficial to us. Foods that contain unsaturated fats include avocados, peanuts and salmon! 🥑🥜🐟

Cortisol is a steroid hormone that helps the body in numerous ways. It helps to control blood sugar levels, regulate metabolism, and reduce inflammation. However, excess cortisol can be detrimental to your health. Whenever we get stressed, our body releases cortisol, and when it accumulates at a high level, it can cause muscle weakness, mood swings, and osteoporosis. Just being happy can alleviate the negative effects cortisol has on your body. Talking to a friend, exercising, playing games, and doing what you love are all therapeutic in their ability to reduce stress. 😌

Have you ever wondered if alcohol consumption has any health benefits? Well, moderate alcohol consumption may provide some, such as: lowering your risk of heart disease. According to The School of Public Health at Harvard University, moderate amounts of alcohol raises levels of high-density lipoprotein, HDL, or “good” cholesterol which are associated with greater protection against heart disease. Moderate consumption may also reduce one’s risk of ischemic stroke and diabetes. Moderate consumption for women has been defined as 1 glass per day and for men, 1-2 glasses per day. Despite the possible benefits, it is important to remember to consult your doctor before making drastic changes to your diet and avoid alcohol consumption if pregnant and if stated by your doctor or pharmacist. Remember: do NOT drink if you are underage and do NOT drink and drive. Drink responsibly! 🥂

Quantum neuroscience is a relatively new field of study that reconciles quantum physics and neurobiology to explain abstract concepts such as consciousness, memory, and lucid dreams. The science behind self-perception and consciousness has stumped scientists for centuries, but now people are beginning to investigate the effect quantum mechanics has on our brains. What is the difference between “mind” and “brain”? Why are we able to perceive the world around us when other processing machines, such as computers, can’t? New hypotheses have been brought forward linking quantum superposition (and quantum entanglement) with the brain’s functions. Real-world applications include harnessing more of our brain’s potential and incorporating similar techniques throughout various technologies, such as quantum computers. Questions like these have been addressed in movies such as Inception, where we question reality and the power of our subconscious. 🧠

However, did you know lavender has actually been proven in studies to have calming abilities, as well as positively impacting mood and increasing cognitive abilities? It also has shown to have sedative properties after inhalation, for those having trouble falling asleep. When combined with carrier oils and applied to the skin, anti-inflammatory benefits were observed as well.

Pregnancy. For women across the globe, pregnancy is a 9-month journey that involves carrying and nurturing a fetus before delivering it into the world. While the experience is undoubtedly painful, the end result is often rewarding. However, in order to ensure a safe and steady pregnancy, there are numerous health tips which women can follow: Diet & Nutrition are crucial, especially when it comes to CALCIUM, IRON, and FOLIC ACID intake. In fact, if folic acid is too low, complications can arise with the newborn child, such as spina bifida. Thus, pregnant women should consume foods rich with folic acid, such as spinach. Kegel exercises are also important, as they can prepare you for delivery by strengthening your pelvic muscles. Moreover, one should eliminate toxins such as to***co, alcohol, and even nail polish remover. Pregnancy is stressful as it is, and while mood swings are common, it’s important to meditate and de-stress in order to prevent additional complications. Join a women’s group, read about pregnancy, and surround yourself with as much positive support as you can! 🥰🤰🏻🤰🏼🤰🤰🏽🤰🏾🤰🏿

CBD (cannabidiol) is an active ingredient in cannabis; however, unlike THC, there are numerous health benefits to taking it. But it’s not that simple. While there is a lot of controversy surrounding the recreational use of cannabis, it is important to analyze the medical effects these substances have on our body. Cannabis consists of CBD and THC. THC is responsible for the euphoric “high” that users experience while smoking/va**ng. However, THC can ruin your body by tampering with your cardiovascular system. If you’re not careful, THC can cause you to do some pretty dangerous things while entranced in your own hallucinogenic world. On the other hand, CBD has renowned health benefits. According to Dr. Peter Grinspoon of Harvard Health, CBD is extremely effective in treating destructive diseases related to child epilepsy. This provides strong evidence which shows that CBD is often more useful in treating seizures than anti-seizure medications themselves! CBD is also commonly used to lower anxiety. So while cannabis and THC are generally harmful, CBD alone has many benefits. Va**ng and smoking CBD oil also has negative consequences, so if you are to take CBD, be sure it’s prescribed by a medical professional.

Organ transplants are a clear example of how far medical treatment has come in the last 100 years. Of all the organs in the human body, the kidneys are the ones which are most often used in implantations. Functionally, the kidneys are responsible for filtering blood and excreting wastes. They are the main focus of renal physiology, and play a critical role in waste excretion. However, many people suffer from end-stage kidney diseases, causing excessive wastes to build up in the body. In order to eradicate these wastes and maintain optimal health, patients have 2 main options: dialysis, (whereby their blood is cleansed) or kidney transplants. Diabetes and high blood pressure are common causes of kidney failure, so in order to prevent this, you should consume fewer processed foods and exercise daily. Stay healthy! 😎
