Roots and Fibre

Roots and Fibre Hello, we’re Rob and Ruby. We’ve started Roots and Fibre to record our Aquaponic and sustainable farming projects. Aquaponics was a real eye opener for us.

We’ve been working towards launching a project in alternative farming for a number of years. Alternative farming being a phrase that encompasses permaculture, organic, biodynamic, aquaponic, hydroponic, small-scale and low-impact principles; all the things conventional farming are not. It’s a system for growing food that is organic by design, perfect for urban environments and makes use of the nat

ural symbiotic relationship between fish and plants. It uses 90% less water than traditional agriculture, and doesn’t rely on already over-exhausted and eroded soils. It made sense to us as a solution for the problems caused by our current consumption behaviours. Roots and Vibre is our vision for Aquaponics to be more accessible, a way of bringing the farm to the city, and the garden in to the home. We spent two months on an Aquaponics farm in India in 2019 and completed a design and building course, building a backyard system out of recycled materials and bath-tubs. We have both spent time volunteering on permaculture projects across Asia and Europe and are in the process of getting Horticulture qualifications. Roots and Fibre is a culmination of everything we’ve learnt in these past years, and everything we are continuing to learn.
