In our current work, we have experienced that many young people do not have a diagnosed mental disorder, however they are still not flourishing/thriving in their lives. Flourishing means that people are able to live up to their full psychological potential, to be resilient and deal with the normal stresses of life, to have emotional intelligence, to experience meaning and purpose in life and to function positively in the social aspects of life.
Adolescence and young adulthood in fact are crucial periods for laying the foundations for healthy development and well-being. Promoting mental well-being and prevention interventions can reduce risk factors for mental disorders, enhance protective factors for good mental and physical health and lead to lasting positive effects on a range of educational, social and economic outcomes for young people.
Mental health in fact, is more than just the absence of psychopathology. It is a state of wellbeing in which individuals can realise their own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and make a contribution to the community (WHO, 2001).
Unfortunately, we are currently witnessing an increasingly competitive and demanding society and inaccurate (digital) representations of a perfect life. These factors may have a negative impact on young people’s self-esteem and lead to a sense of failure, stress, anxiety, exclusion, depression and isolation. On top of that a strong stigmatisation in many countries regarding mental health issues results in a culture of shame in which many young people do not receive the support they would or should have. With this scenario in mind, we wanted to contribute to creating a fertile soil where interventions in this field could be holistic, systemic and multidisciplinary.
Objectives of the Erasmus+ project on positive mental health are:
1. Promoting the engagement, connection and empowerment young people.
2. Fostering social inclusion by proactively preventing any kind of discrimination or social exclusion of young people.
3. Supporting young people in developing emotional and resilience competences, in order to cope with difficult situations and to adapt to a changing environment.
4. Equipping youth workers with a theoretical framework and a practical toolkit for supporting the positive mental health of young people.
The project envisages the elaboration of:
1. A publication that contains the background theories, updated research and implementation requirements for promoting mental health and well-being amongst young people and youth work.
2. New and innovative tools and methods for the promotion of positive mental health. It will build forth on existing tools and methods that are currently in use in youth work for promoting positive mental health amongst young people with the aim of empowering youth and thus supporting cohesive societies, especially in times of uncertainty and ambiguity with disruptive changes. THE TRAINING COURSE WILL BE HELD IN SPAIN DECEMBER 6-12 2020
3. An informational and promotional video that will tackle stigmatisation by informing the target audience (youth and youth workers) about the importance of positive mental health.
4. An instructional and promotional MOOC, addressed to youth workers and trainers, aiming to promote the newly developed framework, competence model and the methodologies and tools that can be used by youth workers for promoting positive mental health.
5. A detailed curriculum for the realisation of a pilot residential course for youth workers and trainers working on the promotion of positive mental health. The course will address the personal and professional development of youth workers/trainers.
6. Six multiplier events taking place in the Netherlands, Ireland (April 28-29 Galaway) , the Republic of North Macedonia, Spain, Italy and Czech Republic, for promoting the outcomes of the project at different stages.
