Letting young people flourish
In our current work, we have experienced that many young people do not have a diagnosed mental disorder, however they are still not flourishing/thriving in their lives. Flourishing means that people are able to live up to their full psychological potential, to be resilient and deal with the normal stresses of life, to have emotional intelligence, to experience meaning and purpose in life and to function positively in the social aspects of life.
Adolescence and young adulthood in fact are crucial periods for laying the foundations for healthy development and well-being. Promoting mental well-being and prevention interventions can reduce risk factors for mental disorders, enhance protective factors for good mental and physical health and lead to lasting positive effects on a range of educational, social and economic outcomes for young people.
Mental health in fact, is more than just the absence of psychopathology. It is a state of wellbeing in which individuals can realise their own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and make a contribution to the community (WHO, 2001).
Unfortunately, we are currently witnessing an increasingly competitive and demanding society and inaccurate (digital) representations of a perfect life. These factors may have a negative impact on young people’s self-esteem and lead to a sense of failure, stress, anxiety, exclusion, depression and isolation. On top of that a strong stigmatisation in many countries regarding mental health issues results in a culture of shame in which many young people do not receive the support they would or should have. With this scenario in mind, we wanted to contribute to creating a fertile soil where interventions in this field could be holistic, systemic and multidisciplinary.
