Health and hygiene

Disease prevention: Maintain a clean environment and implement a vaccination and deworming schedule to prevent diseases.

Regular checks: Regularly observe animals for signs of illness, such as changes in dung/urine color, appetite, or physical appearance.

Parasite control: Deworm animals regularly, with frequency depending on the environment (e.g., monthly in marshy areas, every three months elsewhere).

*Feeding and nutrition*

Focus on round-the-year fodder production to maintain a constant supply.

Consider using corn silage as an easy and cost-effective way to preserve fodder and meet nutritional needs.

Provide mineral mixtures and salt to prevent deficiencies.

Ensure water is readily available to all animals.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭.

As a veterinarian, it's crucial to help farmers and livestock keepers recognize the signs of estrus in their cows to ensure timely and effective breeding. The image below highlights the key behavioral and physical signs that indicate a cow is in heat (estrus). Recognizing these signs improves reproductive efficiency and milk production.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭:

1. Restlessness: The cow becomes unusually active and agitated.

2. Frequent Bellowing: Increased vocalization (mooing) is common.

3. Reduced Milk Yield: A temporary drop in milk production is observed.

4. Mounting Behavior: The cow may mount others or stand still when mounted—known as the standing heat, the most reliable behavioral sign.

5. Swollen V***a with Clear Mucous Discharge: This is one of the most definitive physiological indicators of estrus.

Why This Matters: Timely detection of heat is essential for successful artificial insemination (AI) or natural breeding. Missing the estrus period may lead to longer calving intervals, decreased milk yield, and financial losses.

Veterinary Tip: Always observe cows at least twice a day—early morning and late evening—for heat detection. Use heat detection aids if needed (e.g., tail paint, pedometers).
