Today, Kentucky health officials announced four new measles cases in the Commonwealth. Three cases are part of the same household in Woodford County, while the fourth case is in Todd County. All four cases were unvaccinated for measles. Health officials are working to identify people who may have been exposed while contagious. These four new cases bring the total number of cases of measles in the Commonwealth this year to six.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can cause serious health complications, especially in young children. Vaccination is the best protection against measles. Immunization against measles comes through the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Earlier this year, Kentucky officials shared that MMR vaccine coverage among kindergarteners has dropped to 86.9%, which is lower than the national average of 93%. The United States is currently experiencing the largest outbreak of measles since the disease was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health announced that two infants have died from pertussis (also known as whooping cough) in the commonwealth within the last six months. These are the first pertussis-related deaths in Kentucky since 2018. Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory illness that can be serious for people of all ages, but is most dangerous for infants. Some people with pertussis have mild symptoms and do not know they have it, however, they can still spread the bacteria to others. Many babies who contract pertussis are infected by older siblings, parents or caregivers who may not know they are infected. Health officials encourage everyone to remain up to date with recommended immunizations including the immunization for pertussis, which is combined with the tetanus and diphtheria vaccines (DTaP and Tdap). People who should be vaccinated include:
• All pregnant women with every pregnancy to protect their babies.
• Infants when they are two months, four months, six months, and 12-15 months old.
• Children before starting kindergarten.
• Teens when 11-12 years old.
• Teens and adults should be immunized at least every 10 years or sooner if an injury occurs, or to protect a newborn.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health and the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy advises the public not to consume 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) and kratom products.

Kratom is often used to self-treat conditions such as pain, coughing, diarrhea, anxiety, depression, opioid use disorder and opioid withdrawal. Kratom contains two main chemical compounds, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) that bind to the same receptors in the brain as opioid drugs like morphine and he**in. Kratom has NOT been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Kratom in its modern forms, especially 7-OH when concentrated or synthetically made, poses new and serious risks to the health and safety of consumers. There are no guarantees that:
• kratom products contain the ingredients that the packages claim.
• Active ingredients are present in the correct concentrations.
• Kratom products are free from contaminants or other drugs.

Synthetic versions of kratom are often more potent than the naturally occurring compound. This significantly increases the risk of overdose, severe health issues, and death.

Risk of severe reactions from consumption of these products include:
• Liver toxicity
• Seizures
• Addiction
• Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome in newborns

Following prolonged exposure to kratom before birth can cause withdrawal symptoms in newborns such as:
• Jitteriness
• Irritability
• Muscle Stiffness

Kratom leaves are made into a variety of products, including:
• Drinks
• Pills
• Teas
• Gummies
• And more
There are no FDA approved kratom drug products or over the counter drugs containing kratom, or its ingredients- mitragynine, or 7-OH-mitragynine that are legally on the market in the U.S. For more information regarding this public health focus and advisory, please see the formal announcement: https://www.fda.gov/news-events/public-health-focus/fda-and-kratom
