Members of our Barham LHAC met with senior management from Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) on Monday to discuss the current arrangements for Barham Hospital.

We asked that our community be kept informed about progress towards a solution.

We have received the attached information (see below) in response to our questions - which we think is useful information.

We will continue to follow up on this matter on behalf of our community.

See below media release from Murrumbidgee Local Health District about medical services at the hospital.

See below media release from Murrumbidgee Local Health District about medical services at the hospital.

Medical services at Barham Hospital

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) will begin recruitment for a GP visiting medical officer (VMO) to support the continued provision of medical services at Barham Hospital.

The recruitment of a GP VMO will be undertaken through usual arrangements under the Rural Doctors’ Settlement Package.

In recent months, MLHD has undertaken a tender process for the future provision of medical services at Barham Hospital. This will not impact the continuation of GP services to the community.

This tender process has now been completed and, as a result, it is not sustainable to continue the provision of medical services in their current format.

The District’s Remote Medical Consultation Service, which currently supports the hospital after hours, will continue to support the emergency department and inpatient wards during the transition.

This will make the provision of medical services at Barham Hospital consistent with other small facilities in the District.

In the interim period, MLHD urges residents to continue to present to the Hospital Emergency Department, if they require urgent assessment and treatment.

When a doctor is unavailable on-site, staff have on-demand virtual access to senior clinicians who specialise in emergency medicine.

Barham Hospital is also staffed by skilled Registered Nurses working across the inpatient unit and emergency department.
