It’s funny how life moves in circles.

Here I am, back in a place I last visited 20 years ago.

Back then I was following a vague notion of a dream birthed when I was sitting in front of the TV at about four years old.

A dream more like a memory.
A dream so sacred and fragile I didn’t dare whisper it to anyone.

It was simple: To understand these magical elephants and to live where they live.

Then life happened and pushed me to make more ‘sensible’ career choices, slipping quietly into the restless slumber of a modern existence.

Only to find myself, many years later, on the banks of this river, having travelled thousand of miles on an impulse.

Remembering.
Viscerally.
Inescapably.

The smell of the land made me cry the instant I set foot on it.
That’s when a tiny flame of hope was lit.
A quiet rebellion to maybe dream again.
Questioning the rules that seemed to have been set for my life.

And so the dream flickered and hibernated and flickered until it was not to be silenced again.

So here I am, some twenty years on, on the banks of the same river.

This time with my own child, maybe seeing the children of the elephants I saw last time.

But this time, at peace.

Finally having found my place - a land not unlike this one.
A land that smells of dust and dreams.
A land of a million stars.
A land where these creatures also roam.
A land where I can finally hear their song.

Home.
Finally home.
