Self care selfie - sometimes self-care is a simple and silly as wearing your sweater as a hat because the sun came out from behind the cloud on your mini toddler walk and you needed a hat.

One of the biggest things about me is that I often have very few worries about conforming to societal standards. I was hot at a party this weekend and took my shoes off to put my feet in the grass and get in the kiddy pool to help me cool down. I felt so much more relaxed and and was enjoy the party so much more! Meanwhile most of other adults around me, felt uncomfortable for whatever reason (I know there are many and they are all legit) in taking their shoes off and splashing around.

living in the type of society that we do (capitalist, materialist, western, hierarchical etc) often self-care looks like going against the norm. The norm is for us to show up, be productive, look "respectable" and keep to ourselves while doing it all. Self-care literally means caring for ourself first, so sometimes that means not showing up. Collective care is super important to though so sometimes that means showing up, but doing it in your own way - bringing things you need to make yourself feel comfortable wearing things you need to make yourself feel safe and saying or not saying things that make sure that your needs are heard and fulfilled.

Adding in the fact fact everyone is unique and has different needs means that self-care can often make you stand out as the only one doing something, but I guarantee it that if you show up caring for yourself, other people will feel more comfortable to care for themselves too and we'll all feel a little bit safer, happier, and temperature regulated.

Herbal additions to everyday foods is one of my fav things - this is Slavic Super Kraut with traditional Slavic/ukranian herbs of caraway, dill seed and bay leaf to honor my heritage and super power the digestive powers of this home made white and red cabbage kraut.

Forgot to take a picture of the full house crowd tonight with so many awesome questions and suggestions and conversation about improving iron absoprtion at so here is a super cool staged one 😆. So fun to share some info at a free community chat and so appreciate people from Kimberley and cranbrook coming out to learn and share.
🫘🥩💪
2 second recap - if your iron is low you should check your intake, your loss and your absoprtion. Most people I work with have low end of intake but ABSORPTION ends up being the big issue. How do you improve this? GUT HEALTH.

Feeling so nourished this week with warmth and nature and community!! this weekend was the perfect ending to a week where i was blending herbal immune broths and talking about Fall Nourishment at 'S 1st community talk!

Check out the poster notes I took from the community talk of what everyone thinks of for nourishment this time of the year. Note that some of the foods are more comfort foods then "health foods" because comfy emotions are healthy and important too!! Especially as the days get darker quicker it has been awesome to reach out into the awesome Kimberley/Cranbrook community and feel so connected 🥰🥰.

Fire Cider!! Believe it or not this was my first time making fire cider. I make so many tinctures and vinegar as singles so that I can custom blend them in Clinic that I rarely make "recipes". This is a great one to have for my home apothecary. There's many different recipes out there, but I felt compelled to make it this time because I had horseradish which is a plant that I love so much and have really had the opportunity to have fresh. I will also be making a horseradish tincture for lucky clinic folk 😆😆. Horseradish is so great for cleaning out anything in the sinuses which is helpful in this immune fireside recipe and Clinic will be for any of my allergy and sinus patients who can handle the heat of the horseradish. 🔥🍎🐎

Happy fall ya'll!! September is one of my fav months for sure. So cool to see the changing colours and actions of the plants around us shifting from green and blooming to yellow and hibernating. Excited for a few more hikes and herb harvests before a winter of skiing and home medicine making 🥰🥰🍁🧙🏼‍♀️

Todays hike ended early with a butt soaking puddle jump and no spare toddler pants which turned out to be great because it gave us just enough time to harvest some mullein roots from the biggest mullien forest I have seen in recent time. So cool to see the plants in various stages of growth, blossom, bud and entering hibernation all in the same "forest"
🌲🌲
Mullein roots are harvested in "hibernation" mode after the plant has bloomed and its sending its energy back to the roots. I use if currently "just" for low back pain but an so excited to learn more through research and personal and patient experience about this goregous and prevalents plants lesser know ROOT uses 🥰🌲.

Fireweed harvest at the end of a hike this weekend. The start of the hike was through the end of a couple year old burn and it was pretty surreal with the juxtaposition of dark burnt trees and gorgeous pink fireweed. Felt very humbling to see natures regeneration in action while feeling anxious about the current fire state in our Kooentay area.

New harvest for me tonight - strawberry LEAVES. Reportedly good for me**es and cleansing and eczema and digestion especially in kiddos.
🍓
My one source says harvest before berries, but having similar actions as red raspberry leaf, which has different sources saying harvest before and after berries, I hoped this near end of berry production harvest will do the trick!
🍓
I'll be making tincutre and teas with these dried leaves and will testing it at home before use in the clinic... anyone's else used this abundant but overlooked crop before?!

A naturopath goes on a hike with toddlers and good thing her toddler loves walking cause I found more horsetail then I could carry, self heal, and cleavers that were 3x as tall as my cultivated ones!! Love these Kootenay woods as much as Daria loves her friends.

Pause on the morning run today to harvest some horsetail I've had my eye on! This is one of the few herbs I DONT tincture. I put it in most of my tea blends cause it is such a nutrient power house!! Water extractions (tea or a long cold infusion) is best to get all the minerals out especially the amazing SILICA that give horsetail its strong stalk and bamboo like appearance. Thankful for my running crew helping me with the mini harvest. Toddler for scale ;)

First micro herb harvest happened during spring weeding!! Dandelion roots are best harvested in early spring or fall when the energy and nutrients and phytochemicals are focused in the roost and not the leaves or flowers. Yayyyyy spring!
